Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier
In this production by Sven-Eric Bechtolf from the Zurich Opera House, Franz Welser-Möst conducts Richard Strauss’s fifth opera, and arguably his most scintillating and luxurious musical score, in glorious 5.1 surround sound. Featured is Stockholm-born Nina Stemme as the elegant Marschallin (she will appear with Placido Domingo in the new recording of Tristan und Isolde EMI Classics are releasing this autumn), Bulgarian mezzo-soprano Vesselina Kasarova in her first performance as Octavian, and Swedish soprano Malin Hartelius as Sophie.
Strauss originally intended to follow his tragic operas Salome and Elektra with yet another. However, he and his librettist Hofmansthall finally settled on this romantic comedy, loosely constructed from characters based on 17th- and 18th-century playwrights including Molière.
