Recorded live at the Bavarian State Opera in 1987, this is an excellent production. The stage direction is by Otto Schenk, and stage sets and costumes are traditional and sumptuous. Carlos Kleiber conducts an idiomatic performance.
All the singers are very well cast, and they are obviously enjoying themselves performing this delectable operetta, satirising the Viennese mores of good old days in a light-hearted way.
Pamela Coburn's portrayal of a warm Rosalinde is very good, bringing out (often false) emotions in Act 1 and the spirit of the party in Act 2. Janet Parry is a sparkling Adele: her agile coloratura singing in a bright voice in the party scene is excellent. Eberhard Waechter, though looking rather middle-aged, has a suitably firm voice as Eisenstein.
Brigitte Fassbaender is ideally cast as Prince Orlofsky, and sings and acts extremely well as the host to the party. The whole party scene in Act 2 is very well done, with the dancers of the Bavarian State Ballet participating in the merry-making.
The orchestral contributions by the Orchestra of the Bavarian State Opera is splendid. Kleiber is obviously enjoyng himself on the podium. It appears that he is conducting from memory as the score is always closed when the camera focuses on the podium. The recorded stereo sound is first-rate.
entertaining but average
