I did have this film on my rental list, but then it came on television the other night, and I am glad it did - as I didn't waste my allowance on it! It may have been shocking and controversial at the time, but by todays standards it looks like Bambi. I felt the story trudged along, and the relationship between Dustin Hoffmans' character and his wife was strange. Having read the psynopsis of the film, saying that Dustin Hoffman is bullied by the locals I was expecting a little more than some sniggering and a dead moggie. And as for the 'shocking rape scene' the wife looked like she was enjoying herself to me! Maybe if I had seen this many years ago it may have made more of an impact on me, but I found it to be very dull.
