Kurosawa provides his own version of a gritty film noir. His first collaboration with Mifune where the latter plays an inexperienced detective whose gun is stolen, and who desperately seeks to recover it to save his job. Before the weapon in question is recovered it is implicated in further crimes, The postwar dislocation of Japanese society is vividly brought to life as Mifune trawls the gangster-ridden backstreets of Tokyo. Worthy of greater acclaim.
