Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max is the classic fighting series? PSP debut and is sure to delight the legions of hardcore Street Fighter fans, who can now get their regular Street Fighter fix on the bus, on the toilet or anywhere they so choose! As an indication of just how popular the series is, bear in mind that the Street Fighter franchise has, to date, sold more than 27 million units worldwide. This game is a direct port of the critically acclaimed arcade fighting game, Street Fighter Alpha 3, enhanced with additional original content specifically designed for the portable system including Wi-Fi functionality and extra gameplay modes. You can choose an 'ism' to govern a characters ability to perform powerful combo moves and select from a host of different gameplay modes which offer the endless replay value that players have come to expect from the series. Adding to an impressive roster of more than 30 renowned characters from the world famous Street Fighter universe, four additional fighters join in the fierce competition. Yun, Maki and Eagle, from Capcom vs. SNK 2, as well as Ingrid from Capcom Fighting Evolution, enter the arena and are perfectly reproduced with all new original storylines. Versus battles heat up with the Wi-Fi League Battle Mode that allow a maximum of eight players to duke it out in round-robin mini tournaments. Arcade Mode pits you in a series of matches against CPU controlled opponents. In Survival Mode, you battle against a series of enemies until getting KO'd. Dramatic Battle Mode lets players team up with a CPU controlled character to fight an enemy. Fight the final boss in Final Battle Mode. Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max lets you play alone or with friends in four network modes: you might want to go mano-a-mano with any playable character in Versus Mode. Select a team of three characters and engage in a series of team battles with Team Battle Mode. In Versus Dramatic Battle Mode, you can mix and match the combinations of brawlers as gamers can stack the deck against an opponent with 2 characters-on-1 character matches. Finally you can participate in infinite tag team competitions with Verses Variable Battle Mode. Variable Battle Mode, has been implemented to allow real-time tag team brawls. Tag out and the second fighter enters performing a jump attack, a move useful for escaping tight situations.

Excellent game....let down by PSP

Steetfigher alpha 3 max is one of the first great beat em ups to appear on the PSP. The graphics and sound are top notch as you would expect from a Capcom release. The speed at which the game plays is very fast and smooth. Loading times which can be long on some PSP games are quick and don’t interfere with the action.

The character graphics are clear bright and move around the screen very smoothly, backgrounds are fully animated and colourful. The sound effects and music are top notch with all the characters trademark cries and taunts included.

The amount of characters in the game is huge, with a load more that can be unlocked.

There are also tons of different game styles from arcade to survival. Multiplayer fights are catered from via wireless, but there is no online mode which would have been welcome.

If there was a downside to the game it would have to be the PSP’s control pad. The game requires lots of d-pad and button combinations, but the PSP’s D-pad is not up to the task and pulling off some of these moves is a bit hit or miss. In Japan the game was released with adaptor which fitted over the d-pad and this would have been great if it had been released over here.

Overall this is a very good fighter, but is let down by the PSP’s poor d-pad in the end.
