A puppet warily explores the darkened rooms of a deserted lecture hall and finds other dolls acting in strange ways in a typical stop-motion animation production from the idiosyncratic Brothers Quay. This is gloomy, creepy and quite unsettling — Stephen and Timothy Quay tap into the nether regions of our worst childhood nightmares and the claustrophobic end result couldn't be further from the colourful fantasy of Ray Harryhausen. Screws twist out of objects, mechanical cogs turn, junk comes alive and one female doll exposes her breasts in this relentlessly downbeat and unique nightmare, which continuously offers up one startling image after another to jolt you back from Disneyland.
