    [Highly rated reviewer]

This story is set against the theme of labour unrest in the time of Jim Larkin, while Ireland remained part of the United Kingdom. This is a fantastically acted and scripted portrayal of life in the Dublin inner city tenements. Accurately portrayed are the searing poverty, the class system ('the quality'), the humanity and the dignity of the people of those times. The power of the Catholic church in the Ireland that was to emerge is also hinted at. Not for the trite.

Didn't enjoy it. Was not happy with language in it which was totally not needed. The actors weren't very good at all, pretty wooden.

A highly watchable historical story that shows many of the tensions & frustrations in Dublin before WW1, which were to be a prelude to the Easter Rising of 1916. None of the characters of any class was caricatured, & the personalities developed through the events. The dynamic between the 3 priests was well-rendered, & Cyril Cusack gave a perfect performance as the whiskey-priest who still retains his compassion towards his flock.

Having read and enjoyed this marvellous book, I looked forward to seeing this highly acclaimed TV drama. Despite the awful theme music, I found the acting and casting superb. The story is definetly thought provoking showing us a true glimpse of the hypocrisy of the times. Not advisable to try to watch in one hit...

A poorly produced and very dated film of a very good book. Just read the book, forget the film.
