WEST WING creator Aaron Sorkin presents a revealing and very funny look at the backstage workings of a late-night comedy sketch show in STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP. The show (which is named STUDIO 60) is plummeting in the ratings and it looks like the network, NBS, might be about to axe it. In a last ditch attempt to revive .. Read more

It's one of the worst TV shows ever made and it's not funny at all, I didn't laugh once. I can't believe how bad it is. I thought that it was going to be a comedy because it has Chandler in it. But it isn't a comedy, it isn't anything, and the pathetic story-lines made me cringe.
This awesome, but unfortunately now, canceled TV show has been hyped up to such a degree (thanks to Sorkins' impeccable reputation for lightning fast dialog and some of the best script writing ever -West Wing) that when everyone tuned in and realized it wasn't going to be exactly like the West Wing they switched off. Not sure whether or not it was because American's did'nt 'get' it, after all they were smart enough to see the West Wing all the way through to it's seventh series, but of course they did elect an idiot to the presidency 2 times, so it's anyone guess.
The show centers round Mathew Perry and Bradley Whitford, a writer and producer respectively, who are drafted in to save American TV from it's thoughtless torrid of reality shows and recycled television skits, by a network who had previously fired them for being politically outspoken.
So at it's heart there's the conflicts with the Chairman who cannot stand either of them, a newly appointed executive who wants to give them a chance, the rift between matt's character and his ex-girlfriend who stand on opposite sides of the religious fence. Not to mention the rest of the cast and crew.
It's a complex show, and it's a shame it was never really given enough time to break into full stride. Perry and Whitford are as usual excellent beyond comparison. Definitely give it a go.
Devised by Aaron Sorkin, creator of The West Wing (the best programme ever made), Studio 60 lives up to its pedigree. Fast moving, fast talking, witty and moving at the same time, it does for TV Light Entertainment, what The West Wing did for Politics.
Matthew Perry (Chandler from Friends and former West Wing cameo) and Bradley Whitford (Josh from The West Wing) are a great double act - bouncing off each other incredibly naturally and always with the sort of wit that makes you feel slightly inadequate, it's so sharp.
It's too clever for the Americans - apparently they cancelled it after the first season. A travesty. If you missed it on More4, now's your chance to catch up - you won't regret it.
Excellent show that manages to keep you entertained every episode. If you liked the west wing you will love this!
Brilliant cast, brilliant characters, brilliant series, why the US audience didn't warm to it I have no idea.

Brilliantly written, directed and acted. Shame it was cancelled after one season (too clever for US audiences?). If you enjoyed The West Wing and/or love comedy - this is for you.
why do they have to speak as though they are firing bullets from a machine gun. Not for me!
A lot of the reviews here claim that it was cancelled because it was too clever, too antagonistic to the Christian Right etc.....NO! It was cancelled because it was dull, porrly ploted, contained too many unfunny in-jokes and suffered from characters who no-one could like. Sure, it has some Sorkin hallmarks (pedeconferencing, quick dialogue, scenes which only become clear later in an episode) but the core product is just no good. it all feels like a Westlife cover version of a classic song.
I did not stop watching because it was over my head or offended my sensibilities. Indded, it is no cleverer (arguably less clever) than the West Wing but I loved that show and the American public gave it 7 seasons.
AVOID
Being a fan of West Wing, I expected a lot from this and it doesn't disappoint. It's in a very similar vein to the earlier show but in some ways seems more political due to the sideswipes at the Christian right.
The cast are excellent across the board and the writing is sharp and very funny. It does, however, struggle to be as amusing as the review on this page from the person in Ashton-Under-Lyme: 'I thought it was going to be funny because it had Chandler in it'. Genius!
Amazing, I was gripped from the 1st episode, why they chose to ax this show is beyond me! please bring it back!!
Before I had even watched one episode of Studio 60, I had read so much about why it was cancelled (offended the religious right, too clever for US audiences, etc, etc.) My take on why it was cancelled? It's pretty poor!
I was a massive fan of The West Wing (also written by Aaron Sorkin); I still recommend it to people and I'd rate it in my top 5 of all time TV greats but this pales in comparison. Characters are poorly developed and interaction is predictable. The worst element is the number of 'in-jokes' that revolve around the television industry itself - where the West Wing succeeded was making the presidential story-line not about the President, but the real people backing him up - Studio 60 resorts to one-dimensional characters in an unfamiar and somewhat uninteresting scenario.
Should it have gone onto a further season I can't say I would have made any effort to watch it. Wouldn't recommend hiring this unless you are bored!
Aaron Sorkin, for the unitiitiated, was the genius behind the West Wing. And if you like the West Wing, you'll love this. Brilliantly set behind the scenes of a Saturday Night Live style sketch show, you'll see the backstage politics that are part of the daily lives of TV producers everywhere. And haveing been a TV producer, I can tell you he's spot on, too.
Was cancelled after the first series. Many believe it's because it was too smart for the Americans to get. In reality, it was a victim of similar politics to those portrayed by the show. NBC (The home network of Studio 60 in the US) have a similar show, 30 Rock, created by SNL creator Lorne Michaels. Michaels (And his cast of SNL rejects, led by Tina Fey, along with Alec Baldwin) didn't like that NBC were allowing Sorkin to, essentially, satirise him and SNL. He'd rather they let him do it himself. Badly. Go figure.
