  • 4 stars out of 5

    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

Forget actual submarines, this is a coming of age story set in Wales with impeccable debut performances.

  • Superb Debut

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Richard Ayoade's warm and witty debut feature stars Craig Roberts as Oliver, an awkward 15-year-old schoolboy who is simultaneously trying to forge a relationship with a spiky girl (Yasmin Paige), and bolster the failing marriage of his parents (Noah Taylor and Sally Hawkins). 'Submarine' is an affectionate and insightful celebration of nerdiness and teen angst; a delightful gem which richly deserves the appreciation of as wide an audience as possible.

Just like 'Gregory's Girl' NOT!!! Neither amusing, insightful or making good use of that lovely welsh scenery. A coming-of-age story, but frankly my dear.....

You might expect something far brighter from the comedy legend, Richard Ayoade but Submarine teeters on the edge of dark and this dramatic black comedy gives plenty of guilty laughs through gentle angst. Once you've settled in, this film is a stunner with an amazing cast and director and an endearing brit-flick that'll be a classic for a long time yet. A little unexpected from a comedy legend but also an amazing first feature film for one of our favourite brits.
