Forget actual submarines, this is a coming of age story set in Wales with impeccable debut performances.

Richard Ayoade's warm and witty debut feature stars Craig Roberts as Oliver, an awkward 15-year-old schoolboy who is simultaneously trying to forge a relationship with a spiky girl (Yasmin Paige), and bolster the failing marriage of his parents (Noah Taylor and Sally Hawkins). 'Submarine' is an affectionate and insightful celebration of nerdiness and teen angst; a delightful gem which richly deserves the appreciation of as wide an audience as possible.

I think I need to watch it again to get the full point, but all the same I loved the film , it was so different to any film I've ever watched. I love the genre coming-of-age and this doesn't let down. Always performs well in his characters.

Very good film. Bit slow at first but very different and a great element of humour. Good to see another well made British film

  • Deliciously quirky British coming-of-age comedy

Wonderfully dark yet humourus. Fantastic British coming-of-age film about the troubles of growing up, looked at in a light-hearted, almost cynical way. Fantastic performance by Craig Roberts in the main role, and a cracking directorial debut by Richard Ayoade. Quirky, British, dark and funny.

This is a charming and quite funny little film set in South Wales during the 1970's. Some people may miss the underlying sense of humour but I loved it - very funny at times, often taking you by surprise. Some great characters, captures the geography of the area, and well worth watching.
