Subway

An early work from director Luc Besson, Subway is a dark and highly stylised picture which concerns an enigmatic safecracker (Christopher Lambert) hiding out in the Paris Metro system. While living in the underground and eluding both gangsters and Metro police he meets up with a group of colourful and quirky subterranean inhabitants eager to help him and start a rock band. All the while the safecracker blackmails a rich woman (Isabelle Adjani) with whom he is in love. Meant to be a tongue-in-cheek commentary on urban life, the film works better as a light freewheeling entertainment, with well-constructed fast-paced action sequences and a breezy sense of humour about itself. Subway is an intriguing diversion and a chance to see the cutting-edge of contemporary French moviemaking. --Robert Lane

Christopher Lambert goes underground in director Luc Besson's chic cult classic. He's a safe-cracker who falls in love with Isabelle Adjani while turning over her husband's strongbox and finds refuge from the authorities among the oddballs inhabiting the shady world of the Paris metro. Besson's darkly humorous script and spiky style, combined with the starkly depressing environment and weird subculture, give this New Wave suspense thriller a delightful edginess and unique look. If you like Besson's movies — The Big Blue, Nikita, Leon, The Fifth Element — you'll love this dazzler.

    A bit pointless

I love the works of Luc Besson and bad films starring Jean Reno are few and far between. Sadly after the first five minutes (which are actually quite good - an excellent car chase through Paris) the film goes quickly downhill.

Only recommended for a die-hard Besson fan wanting to watch his filmography.

    Hmmmm

After watching this film, you really can't say what it was actually about.

a few of the plotlines are never finished and none of it makes much sense.

still worth seeing for jean reno's coffee drinking drummer
