Meet Bing (Steve Coogan). This lovable rogue has big plans. He’s going to make something of his life, be a provider for his girl Bernadette (Lisa Millet) and his young son Joe. There’s just one problem: Bing thinks his predilection for gambling is going to help him do so.
If there’s money for betting, he’ll find it and frequently lose it. And he’s always sorry. Until the next time. But for all his failings, Bernadette loves him; his perpetual joviality, optimism and grand fantasies for the future are usually enough to win her round. And as for Joe, well there’s always Grandad George (Bernard Hill) to cheer him on at Football matches when his Dad’s down the bookies. But when Bing’s penchant for gambling develops into an addiction which looms so large he loses his job, his home and eventually Bernadette and nearly his sanity, there is no ‘next time’.

Thiis is quite simplyy one of the best pieces of television I have seen in years. Beatifully written, and performed, and a soundtrack which just reflects the settiing. It is an absolute joy. I laughed and cried in equal measure. An extraordinary story about ordinary life, and how in a moment, everything can change. I urge anyone who missed this to buy it without hesitation. Steve Coogan and Bernard Hill turn in sterling performances, along with newcomers Lisa Millet, as Coogans childhood sweetheart, Bernadette, and Dominic Senior, as his son Joe, whose moments of narrative are pure gold. Craig Cash (The Royle Family, Early Doors) and Phil Mealey (Early Doors), have written this beatifully constructed drama to absolute perfection. I was hooked from the very first lines spoken in voiceover by Joe, who tells the story from his perspective. And a wise and observant boy he is. I defy anyone not to be touched by this tale of hope and despair, as Coogans character, Bob 'Bing' Crosby's life-long addiction to gambling, consumes him, and everything that's part of him. Co-produced by the BBC, and Cash and Mealey's production company Jellylegs, I doubt you'll see a better piece of television again. Quite remarkable!!
Steve Coogan stars in Craig Cash and Phil Mealey's new comedy drama about a man who loses his family to a gambling addiction.
Whilst in parts laugh-out-loud hilarious, Sunshine is also extremely moving, in particular the third and final part of the series, where Coogan must prove to himself and his family he can be the husband, son, and father he once was. There isn't a doubt in my mind you'll laugh and cry throughout it. All the cast members are brilliant and it's probably the best thing Cash and Mealey have written so far. This is definately a BBC DVD you NEED to own.
Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint is to replace Steve Coogan in a film about ski-jump legend Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards. The plasterer was the sole British applicant for the 1988 Winter Olympics ski-jumping competition and became the first competitor to represent Great Britain in the sport. He became a national treasure despite his lack of success - finishing last in both of his events. In 2007, Coogan was signed up to tackle the role of Edwards in a film depicting the comical athlete's Olympic... Read more
