LOVEFiLM Review Super 8

  • 4 stars out of 5

    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

Akin to the Spielberg products of the 70s and 80s, Super 8 is the sort of summer blockbuster Hollywood doesn't make anymore.

    [Highly rated reviewer]

I was very excited to see Super 8. The trailer was first class and filled me with nostalgia of my childhood excitement whenever I saw a film involving Spielberg.

And so it continued into the first hour of the movie - an accomplished pastiche of the New Hollywood style of the late Seventies and Eighties complete with themes of paternalism, teenage angst and small town melodrama that familiarise such films. I really enjoyed the build up and munched away on my popcorn smiling about the references to E.T, Close Encounters, The Goonies, Indiana Jones, etc; even spilling some from my open mouth during the phenomenal train crash.

Unfortunately, this enjoyment ebbed away into the second half. A convoluted mass of ideas developed with Abrams skipping from one idea to the next replacing certain interesting and appealing ideas with farcical plot lines or sorrowful gags.

Super 8 juxtaposed two eras of filmmaking, the more thoughtful, thematic, character based style we can identify as the New Hollywood approach with the flash, thrash, spend-loads-of cash approach of more recent high concept, effects based moviemaking. In this way it offers something more than just a marque movie and as I said earlier, the first hour is really very good.

However, all in all, I came out of the cinema almost angry that I had been disappointed so much - i usually check my expectations but this one got me! Not a bad film as such, just a bad end to a very promising opening.

I guess this is classic Spielberg, but this this film is good clean fun for early teens. All the bad characters either come good or come to a sticky end, and although there are few twists, the plot is a little slow to warm up. I wonder if this would have been a better film if all the characters were five years older and allowed to swear?

The film is quite slow to start. By the time the action starts happening, you have forgotton what happened in the begining. Children will love it, but just not for us. The last 20 minutes of the dvd was faulty, which I have seen in a previous review.

  • Spielberg, but still worth a watch

The usual Stephen Spielberg monster rubbish. Generally, anything from Mr Spielberg I find completely un-watchable and more suitable for Saturday afternoon telly. However, there is something different that grabs you about this film that is in fact quite enjoyable; if a little inevitable towards the end. This isn't going to satisfy the monster film addicts, but it does have a large element of 'monsters'. This won't satisfy the love story brigade, but there is enough sentimentality about the film to keep you hooked. And yes, as other reviewers have said, identifying this with a target audience is difficult. However it will tell you a good story, and if that's what you're after it's well worth a watch.
