Here is a prime example of messing up a film with a certain target audience in mind and not delivering what they want to see! This film barely resembles Super Mario Bros. at all and game creator Shigeru Miyamoto probably cries every time it is mentioned. The only resemblance to the games are that Mario is fat and short and Luigi is tall and thin, (although he is without moustache), and they wear red and green respectively. Oh and Bob-Ombs are still little mechanical bombs on legs. Other than this, goombas are tall humanoid retards, Yoshi looks like a flippin' raptor and King Koopa is a man! The name Bowser isn't even mentioned either. The Koopas are all evolved from dinosaurs, not turtles which is wrong and they are getting that mixed up with content from Super Mario World on the SNES. Just forget it! Don't even try to compare it to the games. If you are a Nintendo purist you will join Miyamoto in crying. I've been a Nintendo fan for about 15 years, but as I like to look at the flipside as well as throwing out bias, I will be honest and say that I enjoyed the film for what it was and not what I expected it to be. It was average, goofy and silly and just mindless family fun. I have no problems with that. Yes I'd have liked a faithful film adaptation, but would it really have worked as a live-action film anyways? Maybe more of a CGI cartoon film, (where you wouldn't have to worry about making Bowser Koopa look convincing in reality as a giant turtle monster), would suit it better.
I rented this for a laugh because my Nintendo daft kids refused to believe that a live action film of 'Super Mario Bros' actually existed.
We settled down with popcorn to watch and even although my boys will watch and like almost ANYTHING they were bored beyond belief withtin the first 30 minutes.
The filmmakers have tried very hard to incorporate all aspects of MArioland but spent far too long trying to explain how things turned out the way they did which made the pace far too sluggish for a kids film.
The plot is convuluted, the dialogue clunky and the styling ludicrous. For hard core fans only.
