Stolid dialogue and poor technicalities are evident throughout what will surely be the last of the series.
I rented this title for my children, after last seeing it as a kid...I remember it being crap then, but after viewing as an adult I found it painful to watch!
Both my children enjoy the first three superman films and the new one as do I. So I thought I would rewatch the fourth one with them to complete the series...
This film is like a B movie compared to the first three..Infact it all started going downhill after superman 2 I think.
This film should have never been made. The storyline is one great big jumbled mess. The flying sequences and special effects are laughable. Even the acting is sub standard. Its like the actors knew it was rubbish and couldnt be bothered to act!.....What were they thinking even making this!!...Avoid like the plague!!
This proves the point that when you rob a franchise of a budget, script and story then the only thing you end up with is a mess.
The rot began to set in after Superman III but when the now defunct Cannon Film Group got their hands on the Superman franchise it was always going to end badly. The effects are beyond lamentable, the actors range from embarassed (Reeve) to there purely for the cold hard cash (Hackman, the only saving grace as the pantomime villain style Lex Luthor)
Avoid like a rat carrying a vial of anthrax.
Well I like 'Superman' 1, 2 and 3. Number 4 was a movie which just needs someone to say 'this is not working'. The effects are terrible in places, and also the main villain just does not work, and the plot as too many holes.
Hidden under there somewhere is something, it feels in parts like the original 'Superman' movie, but then decides to ruin the movie by feeling like a movie on steroids. The movie feels rushed and lacks direction, does not know what movie it wants to be, a teen movie, superhero movie, an Alan Smithee movie, TV movie or a political statement. Well cannot recommend for this reason, but found it alright for a short 78 minutes, which compared to the other 'Superman' movies just is diabolical, Christopher Reeves deserves better but maybe the studio felt that the story was bad from day one, thats why they pulled out supporting it!

In response to Huw form Swansea, yes it would be very interesting to see an extended version, as Superman IV was meant to be much much longer, and it was heavily edited. Apparently it was meant to be worse that it already is, but since no one saw it, I cannot judge. I am a fond admirer or the late Christopher Reeve and Superman, and he did agreed to do this movie at the only condition he would write the script. I guess he was a better actor than a scriptwriter. Having said that, it is great fun and Margot Kidder is as, always, a joy to watch.

entertaining lovely beautiful
You can't beat a good ole Superman film with Christopher Reeve. Unfortunately thogh, this is probably one of the worst, with its dire, corny script. Kept alive as usual by Hackman, Reeve and Kidder. Get it for the kids at least.
A terrible movie.
Superman 1 and 2 are brilliant. Superman 3 was OK, but this is one of the worst films ever made.
It has a stupid plot and looks like it cost about £5 to make.
A waste of time for everyone!
I think the writers had lost their way somewhat.
I like the Superman movies. Let's be honest Superman and Superman 2 are classics, but they should have finished the series with the trilogy. The third film was just about acceptable but this is scraping the bottom of the barrel.
The villain is not scary at all and Lex Luthor doesn't seem menacing anymore. The film seems to be over quite quick without any real action. Nice to see Gene Hackman back and Christopher Reeve is again great as Superman but it just wasn't there. Even the return of Margot Kidder as Lois Lane couldn't save this one.
My Kids are mad on superman kept them quit for a few hours recomened
