Superman Returns

It's been five long years since Superman (Brandon Routh) defeated General Zod and his cronies (in Superman II). Five years since the Man of Steel mysteriously disappeared. And now he's back. Metropolis is still there. So's the Daily Planet, with Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth), editor Perry White (Frank Langella) and photographer Jimmy Olsen (Sam Huntington). But the world has moved on. Lois even won a Pulitzer Prize for her 'Why The World Doesn't Need Superman' article. It seems that the Man of Steel no longer has a part to play, that the people of Earth are fine without him. And then Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) is sprung from prison. And an ominous shadow looms over the planet once more...

    Tons of Fun

The Man of Steel returns, and on excellent form. Starting with a brief explanation as to why he's been away so long, and a short recap of his origins to get the youngsters up to speed, Superman Returns is a whizz-bang comic book action flick that is very hard not to like.

Directed with flair, and shot in a wonderfully comic-book style, everyone on screen seems to be having a tremendous time. There is clever use of footage of Marlon Brando as Jor-El, shot at the time of the original Superman, as well as a great update of the familiar credit sequence and a rejeuvenated score by John Williams.

There are plenty of plot surprises and a great script, including one very slick use of the Bird/Plane/Superman cliche, and the notable change from, 'Truth, Justice and the American Way,' to 'Truth, Justice and... All That Stuff' (Apparently 'The American Way' doesn't hold the same connotations that it used to. Can't think why.) A few flashes of dark humour are also welcome additions.

The downside? Well, the film is awash with corporate logos, branding and product mentions, and it would have been nice if it had been just a wee bit shorter. There are also some rather unsubtle parallels drawn between Superman and Christ which had me puzzled. (Is it really necessary to throw the political hot-potato of religion into a comic-book fantasy?)

But they're minor detractors and easily ignored. On the whole, Superman Returns fully deserves to be the summer blockbuster it looks set to become. See it on a very, very big screen.

    Superman with updated special effects

After the astonishing X-Men franchise, I had high hopes for this movie. But, Singer managed to only disappoint me. His first mistake was instead of making this movie able to stand on its own, he focused too much on making it homage to Richard Donner. It felt too much like a rehash of the first movie just with updated special effects. Seriously, go through both scene by scene; so many parallels it's not funny. The problem with this approach gives us a way too powerful Superman and elements that are completely outdated by now, eg a campy Lex Luthor. There was also a bit of miscasting with Bosworth and the main character himself had very little lines throughout the whole movie. The plot was severely lacking. Luthor's scheme made no sense and was just very poorly executed. The ending defied all logic and pre-established canon...especially within the universe Singer was emulating. On top of that, the movie was extremely dull. There were only inconsequential action scenes to show off the new and improved special effects and otherwise no real challenge for Superman. Yes, the first two movies were hardly perfect, but given the time they were made they are quite enjoyable. Super Returns, however, is not. It's just an empty shell of what could and SHOULD have been in an era where comic movies are dominating. Superman is called an epic character; it's time for them to give him an epic challenge and no more of these stalemate battles with Lex Luthor.

Bunton lost out on Superman role

    • 09 Sep 2009

Former Spice Girls star Emma Bunton was considered for the role of Lois Lane in 2006 blockbuster Superman Returns - but lost out on the part to Kate Bosworth. The singer flew to Los Angeles to audition in front of director Bryan Singer when the moviemaker was assembling the cast for the superhero's comeback. Singer also reportedly auditioned actresses Claire Danes and Keri Russell for the role, but eventually opted to hire Bosworth following a recommendation from Kevin Spacey, who took the... Read more
