This big-budget, epic-scale version of the Man of Steel legend is irresistible, fabulous entertainment. The elegiac opening — from the destruction of Krypton to Clark Kent's arrival at the Daily Planet in Metropolis — turns more traditional comic book when Clark falls for Lois Lane, before a bright and breezy confrontation with comedic criminal Lex Luthor. The deliberate clash of styles generates much excitement and, yes, you'll believe a man can fly. Christopher Reeve is perfectly cast (though Dean Cain fans may now disagree) and as a spectacle it's a highly satisfying confection.

    Classic, unrivalled superhero epic

Chris Reeve was the one and only Superman - an absolute classic movie with three distinct segments - the heavenly glow of the Kryptonian scenes (with Marlon Brando as his father), then the wonderful cornfield landscapes of the Smallville growing-up scenes (with Glenn Ford as Pa Kent), and Metropolis - where Reeve shines as the dual personality, bumbling Clark and alter-ego Superman.

His first appearance is one of the most memorable scenes in cinema history. Great performances and shot so well - this was filmed with integrity (or as Donner put it... versimilitude). You will believe. DVD has amazing extras too, 8 minutes extra footage and brand new sound effects.

    The best movie ever made?

    Good show to watch...

Maybe it is because I am a Superman fan, but I do believe this show is definitely a classic and a show that anyone who loves the superhero/comic book come movie theme would want to watch. Maybe the beginning was a bit too 'draggy' and long but you won't be disappointed if you are into these types of movies. I'm looking forward to Superman 2 now. And there is only one Superman, Christopher Reeve.

    Original and still the best!

Still the best Superman film there is and the extra footage only enhances the story! It's a real testament to Richard Donner that this 28 year old film can still compete in the special effects race!

Awesome and best of all my 4 year old son loved it too. A treat for all ages!

This movie has been restored and remastered brilliantly, the picture is crystal clear and audio surrond sound that blows the music and special effects to an all new level.

Two people who make this movie very exciting to watch are Cristopher Reeves who plays Superman brilliantly and Gene Hackman who made us laugh as Lex Luthor.

All in all the DVD of this movie, which has been extended to 146 mins, is far superior to the old VHS version.

    Reevesy, Nice Pants!

This, and I'm saying this after seeing the new Singer Superman, will be the only good Superman film made ever. There is just no replacing Reeves or Hackman. Singer knew this when he made the new flick, and consequently cast actors who resemble the old stars, and then asked them to act like them too, and I think this is where he's gone completely wrong. The new Superman should have discarded the old films, left them as memories, and created something new. Look at Batman Begins and Spiderman. If only the producers hadn't screwed with Supes II and got Donner canned, we could have had two Superman classics.

Glad I've seen it, at last!

Good film considering its age. But personnaly i dislike the out of date special effects, much prefer to seen the multi-million dollar modern stuff. Should be part of everyones education though.

    THERE WOULD BE NO SPIDERMAN?

    This film inspired the Spiderman movie. no wonder the film is an influencial classic from 1978. Jor-El{ late Marlon Brando} sends the last son of Kyrpton, his own child: Kal-El in spaceship to earth before Kyrpton explodes. Kal-El is found by an elderly couple and is named Clark Kent. Clark has amazing skills. he is an alien and he would love to help people. he becomes Superman{ Christopher Reeve}. but he pines for the reporter Lois Lane{Margot Kidder}

while trying to stop evil billionaire Lex Luthor{ Gene Hackman} this film inspires!

Like watching it for the first time.........

Having seen so many disjointed superman movies broken up by advert breaks and shown in the very restrictive pan and scan format, this 1: 2.33 original format version was a breath of fresh air. The 5.1 sound is also very impressive. It's a slow paced, action/romance with great performances from Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman, and a great score from the legendary John Williams. I thought I'd seen Superman before, it turns out I hadn't seen much of it, which was nice.

It's a thoroughly enjoyable Sunday afternoon flick that you can watch with the kids. Ok some of the 'special effects' are a bit ropey, but then again this film was made when I was about 6 months old..........

Overall, I'd say it's aged gracefully. Recommended
