Shannon portrays Mary Katherine Gallagher, the terminally bumbling, energy-stuffed Catholic schoolgirl whose one wish is to kiss Sky (Ferrell), the hunkiest fella at St. Monica's High School. Mary Katherine thinks her only chance at stealing Sky away from his gorgeous girlfriend Evian (Hendrix) is to become a star, and her only chance at accomplishing this task is by entering St. Monica's talent contest and winning a role as an extra in a Catholic-approved, morally-correct movie. McCulloch's film is, like most Saturday Night Live-big screen adaptations, more a series of loose sketches that keep the viewer laughing throughout.

Calling this particular Saturday Night Live spin-off a cut above their usual product isn't exactly a compliment. It does have its moments, but it sometimes has to go wildly out of its way to get to them. Based on Molly Shannon's Mary Katherine Gallagher character, a nerdy Catholic high-school girl is determined not to let her dizzy nature or her snotty classmates stop her from becoming a star. The supporting characters are underused, and much of the action is generally lame. However, the non-stop attempts at humour do manage to induce a mild chuckle every few minutes.
Based on a character from the TV series Saturday Night Live, a sporadically amusing comedy that does not travel well beyond the confines of the USA.
This film is absolute drivel, I only rented it out because it had Will Ferrel in (who by the way was the best thing about this one and a half hour torture of a film). If you've seen some of Ferrel's recent work and are working through his back catalogue then do not rent this, how this ever got commissioned into a film I'll never know!
Molly Shannon gives an excellent performance in this hyper reality comedy as a girl who wants to be superstar. Will Ferrell plays her quarterback love wannabe to good effect and Glynnis Johns is hilarious as the grandmother who supports her granddaughter. This film does have its moments and is quite funny. It is uneven and some moments tend to drag but overall the film is quite fun.
