A satisfying full-length Svankmajer work

A great fan of Svankmajer's work, I looked forward to this full-length feature. It uses real live actors (something Svankmajer does not do very frequently) in a somewhat stilted style, which is almost Pythonesque in its delivery.
Eugene's dreams intermingle with his real life but there is a serious underlying Freudian complex involved as he tries to work out why he would want to cheat on a wife that he obviously loves. A lot more clear cut than much of Svankmajer's work, it may not appeal to those that prefer his pure surrealism. Somewhat gross at times it nevertheless comes off without being offputting. I prefer Alice to it generally but it certainly is worth the time and effort to watch and never seems to drag at all. Svankmajer is a genius filmaker and animator.- Was this review helpful to you?

(3)Tedious film
By a customer , 15 Feb 2013I watched this film for about 10 minutes and found it rather boring. I didn't continue to view it and ended up returning it straight away.- Was this review helpful to you?

No subtitles - but annoying voiceover instead
By LikesFrenchFilms (46 reviews) , 07 Dec 2012Although this DVD is advertised as Czech with English subtitles, and the menu lets you select them, it turns out this is a mis-translation. What you get instead is a a dull English voice over the top of the Czech speaker. Very like that of translated news reports where a foreign dignitary speaks then is muted slightly and the BBC interpreter speaks the words. Couple this with a very arty and difficult to follow story told in a Terry Gilliam style of live action and cartoons, and you have an unappealing and unentertaining film.- Was this review helpful to you?
