    [Highly rated reviewer]

I was quietly impressed by this series, but I think that may be because I had such low expectations for it, let's face it, remakes are rarely good, remakes of TV shows even less so.

It doesn't really focus on the actual downfall of civilisation (although more so than the original), one moments there's a nasty flu going around the next everyone's dead. And all the characters seem to take the events in their stride, perhaps because there isn't enough time to preform proper character developments.

The main character, the mother, has been changed from upperclass to middle, and I find her a lot more irritating than in the original...all she does is preach and whine...civilisation is no more, you don't have time for morals!

  • a good effort but not as good as the original

To be honest wasn't expecting to be better than the original and I proved correct. The problem I had although I did like it was that it tried to copy something that went before in storyline and did not do very well. But its worth a watch and coming to the end of of episode 1 it was starting to warm up. Overall I think it was to much trying to replicate the older version and most of the time with anything that is being made, it doesn't work.

  • Good series but a little frustrating!

    Rated - 3.5 stars

Great series, really enjoyed it, but it falls into the trap a lot of British series' fall into. It's TOO 'event packed' (I'll not say action packed, more on that later); each episode has SO much going on it's just a bit too quick. Sometimes you want them to wait around somewhere and develop the characters which they never really get time to do. Some fairly major characters are introduced, 'developed' then dropped all within one episode. US series' like this end up being 10-20 episodes long. UK series' seem to want to cram as much as a whole US series does into 6 episodes and sometimes it makes it all feel very rushed and too packed in.

The other downside is the 'BBC effect', where all the 'heroes' are basically Guardian reading middle class human rights campaigners. There's no real action in this because every time a gun is pulled out, so is a speech about the perils of violence and how we all need to get along. More frustratingly, the good lot get completely dominated by everybody because every time they dominate the bad ones and win a bit of ground a human rights anti-guns speech makes them drop all their weapons and the bad lot win.

Also, it was very much planned to go on for a third series; it ends on a cliffhanger!

An enjoyable remake of the 1970s version which I watched when originally broadcast in the 1970s and recently on DVD. It's not as gloomily shot as the original and consequently is a bit more upbeat. The story follows Terry nation's original but with an emerging different twist that makes it more reflective of the times it was made in where concerns are ore about corporate greed and the environment than nuclear immolation and societal collapse.

They spend a bit too long searching for group members who have become separated from the group on several occasions, but on the plus side the casting is pretty much spot on unlike the original which had a few incredibly irritatingly members.

Best of all the bad guys are convincingly bad even the one that is one of the good guys!

For a tv mini series this was rather good the characters are all believable and throw themselves into their roles.Looking forward to the next series my only critisism is that there is an episode missing from the set so I had to play a bit of a guessing game for some of it.Well woth a watch on a Sunday afternoon when there is nothing else to do.

  • Great TV series

Very well done TV series that both my better half and I enjoyed. Characters that you can relate to an a pretty good plot.

I think that the scriptwriters might have missed the obvious plot of 'why didn't they simply go find a nice farm and live there'. Apart from that, well worth watching.
