After years of research scientists are ready to reveal their greatest triumph - a virulent germ that can stamp out bubonic and syphus epidemics. However, the Authority invokes the Official Secrets Act and gags the team, claiming that in the wrong hands this formula could be used for germ warfare. A bitter conflict between science and bureaucracy ensues, with the stakes being raised immeasurably when a bitter ex-serviceman persuades one of the research team to part with highly confidential documents.

A strange film for the Boultings to have made in 1960, with so many fine works behind them, as it seems a refugee from 1950s TV. But its worth checking out by anyone who likes old British B movies. OK, the plot is no great shakes, being about ethical dilemmas and espionage in a germ research establishment (which, to be fair, probably seemed pertinent drama at the time). However, its absorbing enough, helped by an excellent script by Nigel Balchin from his own novel. And it has a terrific cast, with loads of familiar faces from the period, and stand-out performances from Peter Cushing, Ian Bannen (as an armless Korean War vet) and Thorley Walters (as a beguilingly bumbling security agent). As a bonus, Spike Milligan is in there too, as a bit of comic relief, playing a character seemingly left over from the Goons.
