This is the sort of thing the BBC do best. These 2 serials capture the feeling and spirit of Arthur Ransome's classic works. They are on this DVD as separate episodes, not the joined up 'movie' versions that have been reeased on VHS.
There are no subtitles.
The biography 'extra' is quite weak, and wrong in more than one detail!
Doctor Who fans should look out for Colin Baker as the village doctor (of course!) and also a cameo appearance from Patrick Troughton in The Big Six.
The picture quality is 'good transfer of iffy source material' ie. you can see every scratch of the old prints used for the transfer. They look like returns from overseas TV stations; this is another thing that Doctor Who fans will be familiar with ;-)
This was an absolute delight in a world of high tech, my sons of 9 and 4 years were glued to the end. A slow paced drama of nostalgic country summers spent with not too much grown up interruption, great characters and accents! We loved it.
