Jeremy Irons makes a pig's ear out of Proust's novel Un Amour de Swann from Remembrance of Things Past. As the French aristocrat, Irons scampers, angst-ridden and tortured, after working-class totty Ornella Muti through the scummy streets of Paris. His lust is fulfilled, but he remains lovelorn, troubled by the fact that he genuinely cares for her. Alain Delon is more charismatic as the gay, butch Baron and Muti is suitably smutty and sexy, but with Volker Schlöndorff at the helm, this is an awkward affair that lacks any true passion.
Reasonably successful attempt to film part of an unfilmable book. Comparisons with Letter from an Unknown Woman are inevitable.
