Based on the screenplay by Herman Raucher for the 1968 film of the same title, SWEET NOVEMBER stars Charlize Theron and Keanu Reeves in the story of an experimental love affair. Theron is Sara, a free-spirited woman who runs across tight-laced ad executive Nelson (Reeves) at the DMV. Nelson wants only to be left alone to continue on the fast track of his career, but Sara is drawn to him. She makes him an offer: to be her November, the man who will live with her for one month only, during which she will "help" him. Not sure why, Nelson accepts, finding that Sara appeals to something he didn't even know was inside him. As she begins to change his life, Nelson realizes what he's been missing in his career-centered world--but just as he begins to reach out to her, Nelson finds that Sara has secrets of her own.

Hot on the heels of Autumn in New York comes Circle of Friends director Pat O'Connor's turgid Love Story clone. Keanu Reeves takes the lead role of a narcissistic ad executive who gets too big for his Gucci slip-ons and ends up jobless. Vexed and confused, he encounters free-spirited Charlize Theron who out of the blue offers to be his November — she will commit herself to him for one month and in that time turn him into a nicer person. Love is in the air, but when Reeves wants to continue into December, he uncovers Theron's deep dark secret. The two leads are endearing, as is the San Francisco backdrop, but this is just too sickly sweet — like eating ice cream with sensitive teeth — and is destined to end up as afternoon fare for the weepie brigade.
Soft-centered weepie romance, a remake of the Sandy Dennis-Anthony Newley movie of the 60s; time has not improved the story, nor does this more attractive cast raise it above the mundane.
So, what of Sweet November? Well, it features two actors at opposite ends of the queue when they were handing out acting talent in Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron, and is about as sickly sweet as candy floss dipped in honey.
But don't for a moment think it is all bad, because it is not. The film muddles along at first, as Keanu's high flying advertising executive meets, befriends, and falls in love with Charlize Theron, who runs month-long 'life improvement' live-in therapy, and at the same time, falls in love and learns life lessons aplenty.
You know it can't end well for them, and I won't tell you what does happen, only that I had a good few tears in my eyes, and had to go and watch something else before I went to sleep. Actually, I wrote this review. But then, i'm a fairly romantic soul.
The film has its faults. It has a muddled script, the plot dives all over place, and Keanu's acting does leave a lot to be desired, as much as I tried to make it not an issue. In the end, though, if you are looking for a romantic drama to pull your heartstrings, and give you that uplifting 'love of life' boost, then Sweet November could be just what you are looking for.
Romantic comedy, has its sad moments definately fun to watch on a sunday afternoon in bed.
