Um! Swing Kids. A ...By HD (148 reviews) from West Midlands , 28 May 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]Um! Swing Kids. A group of teenagers led by Robert Sean Leonard are trying to avoid becoming Nazi foot soldiers just prior to World War II in this terribly uneven film that just never does intrigue or interest the way it wanted to. The film wanted to show that young male Germans were just as normal and peace-loving as youngsters in the U.S., England or anywhere else. This strange little piece of cinema tries to focus on a little-known part of history and for that it is admirable, but there is just not much substance there. Established actors Kenneth Branagh (who goes uncredited here) and Barbara Hershey seem wasted.

Great MovieBy a customer , 31 Aug 2011Really Good! Gave an previously not filmed view on the life in Germany for many Germans and the Jazz impact. A deffo recomend for anyone who likes ww2 movies.
Customer ReviewBy a customer from UK , 23 Jun 2008Seeing as this was a disney movie I figured when I bought it it would be a light hearted drama about friends who were swing kids during World war II. Obviously I realise that any tale of the war and Nazi germany would have to be slightly dramatic but I though it would focus on the music and the swing dancing.
Oh how wrong could I be!!This film is a very moving and very well acted piece about Nazi supresion and their vile teaching and hatred about all things Jewish. The swing is mearly a subplot ,put in to make the trailer look like children could watch it, and serves to offer the only light hearted 10 mins in the film! The story revolves around Peter (a character that could have been way to sappy and disney to handle himself in reality and baked in self pity if it wasn't for the stunning acting by Robert Sean Leonard)who faces a battle between joing the HJ like everyone else and dying for the cause of what he believes in. For a disney movie there is alot of death and mysery but don't let that stop you watching it!
Although this film is nothing like I expected I loved it because of the brilliant acting and sometime quite gritty portrayl of Nazi Germany, its not the kind of film it says on the box but what emerges is an altogether more interesting piece on the struggle through the war and through history of human hatred and love, the changes in friendship and family and the ultimate betryal that is caused by the madness of war.
Special mention has to go to RSL and Christian Bale for not only acting so well as to turn a mussy script into a moving one but for being able to sing and dance so perfectly too. The acting all round (apart from a terrible performance by a young noah wyle!!!) makes this a emotional and believable film I would definitly recommend if you want to explore History and the human mind some more but not if you thought this was Disney, about dancing and like happy endings!!

Swing Heil!By missyreicheru (63 reviews) from Glasgow , 12 May 2008The music, the scenery, the costumes, the long hair...it was thrilling and intoxicating - i totally got swept away with the Swing Kids lifestyle. What fun! Rebellion at its best - the power of music to fight the Nazi's :P
An excellent cast of actors who all go on to create big names of their own - and it is evident from this early movie what great successes they would all be.
A fine film.

Fab filmBy Clemo1 from durham , 27 Feb 2006I first saw "Swing kids" many years ago and loved the film then. I have hunted for it since, then found it here. I watched it, expecting to not enjoy it, as I was much younger when I saw it. I really really enjoyed the film again.
So much energy and passion in the cast, and a good tale of rebelling against Hitler and his henchmen.
