Complex but intriguing - a political film for today
By SamFromMaidenhead (257 reviews) from Maidenhead , 04 Mar 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
Syriana follows the multi-plot narrative that films such as Traffic and Crash did so well. Four stories are told, each interdependent on the other. One is about the CIA involvement in the Middle East, one is about the merger of two oil giants, one is about the heir to a oil rich country and the other about a Pakistani immigrant who gets laid off by an oil company only to find solace in Islamic militarism. This film is not easy going as the plots are very complex - especially the story about the oil merger and the corruption that goes with big business. The real pay off is in the last thirty minutes when all the stories come at log ahead and a climatic conclusion is sought. The film is a little over-indulgent in its complexity but it is riddled with some tension enhancing scenes such as the Clooney's torture and the CIA spy satellite. The acting and direction is superb. Be warned half the film is in subtitle but this adds to the realism of this project. Syriana at no times dumbs or glosses over the arguments about oil politics. Could be shorter and a little more straightforward for a first viewing but it should be commended for asking all the right questions.- Was this review helpful to you?

(615)Save Your Retinas, It's A Naff Action
By bstar (4 reviews) , 27 Apr 2013Not one to rate down films but this one isn't worth it. You find yourself struggling to keep track of all the details, a lot of which you don't need to know. Yes, it gives you a good view of life in the middle east and shows it in a realistic and brutal way. At times there were tense scenes which you thought were going to build up to something, yet, like with the rest of the film, they went nowhere. This film is very tempting to watch purely because of Cloony. He acts well and as does Damon but don't start thinking this is another oceans 11. It captures the same cleverness but if you're after action don't fall for the high impact trailer, this film is a dragged out, dry drama that could have been great but didn't go anywhere.- Was this review helpful to you?

Don't waste your time
By a customer , 13 Apr 2013Slow, disjointed, confusing, lots of scenes of people moving around with little or indistinct dialogue. Wish I hadn't wasted my time on this one. My GF thought it was a Clooney tax paying project. Don't waste your time.- Was this review helpful to you?

whisper whisper ....
By RichyF (2 reviews) , 03 Apr 2013I should have listened to friends who assured me I'd hate this film! The complex, interweaving plotlines I can handle - in fact I like this. The whispering was my biggest problem. It seems to be popular at the moment. To enhance the mood, get all the characters to whisper! Along with the 'moody' lighting, this spoilt totally what could potentially be a fantastic film.- Was this review helpful to you?

High class political thriller
By HfromDerby (1 review) , 24 Mar 2013A complex plot which weaves together four separate stories in a telling political thriller. At times, it was a little hard to follow, but the climax was well worked and the message clear for all to see. Two hours well spent!- Was this review helpful to you?

Lots of scene-changing and mumbling actors
By a customer , 23 Mar 2013A movie that tries to enhance its image of sophistication by having all the actors mumble or speak at a whisper, maybe this is to hide up the incoherence of the dialogue?- Was this review helpful to you?
