In this inept and lengthy adaptation of James Clavell's bestseller, Bryan Brown plays a 19th-century European trader who establishes his headquarters in Hong Kong, despite opposition from and frequent attacks by rivals. Brown is a hero we're supposed to like, but don't, while Joan Chen adds a touch of Oriental elegance to the sprawling plot over which director Daryl Duke seems to have no control. Shot in China, it might just as well be on a spare backlot.
19th-century soap opera with 18th-century plotting and dialogue.
I have just finished reading all the tia pan stories and I was interested to see how it translated to the big screen.
The answer is mixed, the film stays very true to the original, but as the book is a good three inches thick there is so much back story and important points missing.
As a result the film is a little stilted
