  • Incredibly disappointing

    [Highly rated reviewer]

I saw this at the London Film Festival a couple of years ago, so it has taken a while to get a limited UK release. To say it was a let-down for me would be a bit of an understatment. I'm a huge fan of Hana-Bi, Zatoichi and Sonatine and knew this was from a different part of Takeshi Kitano's mind - this is the sort of stuff that he's more famous for in his home country - maybe the humour just doesn't travel well. It's a mess of a film and I didn't like it all.

Usually I love Takeshi Kitano which is why I chose this film despite the poor reviews.

I watched it to the bitter end by which time I wasn't exactly sure what was going on.

Another reviewer described it as being 'too surreal'. I don't always agree with other reviews but this time I do.

Not one to add to my collection.

  • You can't Beat Takeshi

Takeshi pushes the boat out again and stretches the boundaries of what he and others have done before.

This film has surreal touches galore and out Jonzes Spike with showing scenes and then showing the casting sessions for those scenes.

Unfortunately it struggles to keep up the conceit of a Takeshi lookalike who is a struggling actor but seems to become empowered to become like him ( I think there's a Woody Allen short story similar to this ) so it can look messy but you can't blame the guy for trying and it beats being disappointed by a poor sequel.

  • Well I liked it!

Everyone else seems to hate this film but here is an alternative review.

I thought this was great! Ok the stage musical bit did go on for about a fortnight but I thought this was typical wierd, surreal, self obsessed Takeshi Kitano.

The ending is fantastic and the journey to get there is one long strange nightmare.

Are my dreams just wierdly similar to TK's? Why don't any of his fans like them? Dude, I just don't agree with other reviewers.

If you like Kitano give it a go and see who you agree with. Kitano and me surley can't be the only ones giggeling!

  • Too surreal for me

I like most Takeshi's films but this one is so weird I'm not sure I can say I liked it and why. Are we suppose to laugh or think about it or?

I gave up and found another movie to watch.

  • Utter Drivel

I would rather be stuck in a lift with Jordan for 10 hours and listen to her talk about herself than sit through this ever again. Take the average film by a film student. Then multiply the pretentiousness and the downright need to be weird by 20 and you have this 'experimental' film. Why does experimental always mean boring as hell ?
