Taking Lives

With superb investigative skills heightened by uncanny natural instincts, Iliana Scott (Angelina Jolie) is not a typical FBI profiler. This beautiful, no-nonsense Special Agent is a cut above the rest, which is why her old friend Captain Le Claire (Tcheky Karyo) calls her to assist his detectives in Montreal when a brutalized body is discovered in a construction site. A murder the next night provides proof of a serial killer, but this time, there is a witness. Artist James Costa (Ethan Hawke) not only saw the murder, but also tried to save the victim, and is even able to provide a sketch of the killer. The plot only thickens as ultra-dedicated Scott, along with ornery, territorial Detective Paquette (Olivier Martinez) and good-natured Detective Duval (Jean-Hugues Anglade), continue their investigation, linking together numerous similar murders over the years and arriving at a disturbing conclusion. To complicate matters even more, Scott is drawn to their charming key witness, Costa, and finds herself in uncomfortable territory as she fights her romantic impulses in an effort to remain professional. Director D.J. Caruso's (THE SALTON SEA) second feature also stars Keifer Sutherland and Gena Rowlands, and was filmed on location in Canada.

Director DJ Caruso stumbles his way through the conventions of the psychological thriller in this dreary follow-up to his hyperactive The Salton Sea. A by-the-numbers serial-killer film that's so well signposted you can see the plot twists a mile off, it's neither remotely believable nor suspenseful. Instead a strong cast is underused in a vehicle for Angelina Jolie's photogenic features. She plays a top FBI profiler, called in to help Canadian homicide detectives Jean-Hugues Anglade and Olivier Martinez catch a chameleon-like murderer who assumes his victims' identities. It's hard to take Jolie's role seriously, especially when this so-called consummate professional goes gaga almost immediately over key witness Ethan Hawke. For his part, Hawke looks vaguely uncomfortable throughout, while the appearance of Kiefer Sutherland as the potential “life-jacker” is lazy typecasting. Though the picture's effects are suitably grisly and it does boast one genuinely jumpy moment, the slack pacing and scant drama means there's nothing really to take the breath away — except perhaps the monumental stupidity of the final few frames.

    • Radio Times
  • Another run-of-the-mill murder mystery that offers nothing new, other than Angelina Jolie as the sort of profiler who lies down in graves in search of inspiration; the movie's makers should have followed her example.

    Excellent

A good film. It made us jump several times, nearly had red wine over ourselves, had very good twists and turns, kept you guessing until the end, change from the usual American run of the mill film, a better Canadian production.

    Seen It All Before

A film that ticks all the boxes, but delivers a big zero in the entertainment dept. Soundtrack good, check. Opening scene good check. Beautifully edited, check.

Then the sub seven title credits appear and you start to think oh dear. The casting is miserable as well, Ethan Hawke is woefully miscast and gives the worst performance I have watched from this usually capable actor. Then theres Angelina Jolie. The film asks you to believe her as one of th FBI's top criminal minds, an obsessive loner in the Manhunter model. With the big lips, hips and bazongas she just ain't cutting it.

It ain't Jolies fault how she looks but she just can't carry off this material. So what we are left with is a plodding who dunnit with 2 suspects in the frame and a last reel revelation that you can see coming 90 minutes ago.

There really is nothing in this that you haven't seen direct to video or on 5 with Shannon Tweed in it. You wouldn't rent those so why bother with this.

There Will Be Blood star lines up new project

    • 27 Feb 2008

An up-and-coming actor who recently starred in Oscar-winning There Will Be Blood has lined up his next project, in which he will both appear and executive produce. Paul Dano, who played two characters in There Will Be Blood and managed to steal some of the attention away from critically acclaimed co-star Daniel Day-Lewis, will next be seen in Gigantic, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The film is described as an "offbeat romantic comedy" and will also feature Zooey Deschanel of... Read more
