[Highly rated reviewer]I enjoy Studio Ghibli films, and I liked Le Guins Earthsea books, but I found this film was sorely lacking in both areas.
The books do have a wandering pace, and perhaps that doesn't translate into film that well, but the characters weren't this wooden. Scenes crawled by with rather clumsy animation - for Ghibli - and almost no explaination of anything; just when a revelation is to be revealed, it is cut and we are left with no answers and a lot more agriculture. Most of it felt like, Ah, this is actually kinda scary and threatening, what are the characters going to do now? Oh never mind, we have more ploughing to do...
Even the heart-felt song mid-way through felt torturously long and tedious.
If you love Ghibli, you'll probably get something from it, but the animation is not up to their standards.
If you love Earthsea and Sparrowhawk, I suggest you leave it alone. There are flashes of the book's intentions and 'I remember when this happened' moments (which speak more like 'this is based on a book you know') not to mention Sparrowhawk himself does virtually nothing.
I hope one day someone makes a proper rendition of Ursula's books, this and the sci-fi channel's poor attempt just use and abuse them. Either that or she just stops giving people the rights to them.

Critics are too critical.By behold (1 review) , 17 Oct 2013Personally, I thought this film wasn't as bad as people made it out to be and it's not a bad first try by Goro (Hayao's Son). The visuals were calm and beautiful (as per usual of a Ghibli Movie). The music is very atmospheric and the voice acting is wonderful. True the story is a little...all over the place and perhaps slow here and there BUT the way I see it, this movie is like what 'The Black Cauldron' was to Disney. A darker, slower medieval tone, yet still serene, beautiful and memorable none the less. Once you look past what Critics called it and gave it, you may see that this is a bit of an under appreciated film...plus along with a cup of tea maybe quite a good film to relax with (again like the Black Cauldron).
Disappointed Ghibli FanBy ItachiFan (1 review) , 23 Mar 2013I was expecting great things from this film as it is from the son of the great Miyazaki. However it did not meet my expectations. This film was nothing special, it was good and that is to be expected from studio Ghibli. But it did feel like I was forcing myself to sit through it. Overall, just a film to kill time.
best ghibliBy Wilsdon (4 reviews) , 07 Jan 2013no matter what this is still my favourite ghibli film. it is so engaging and the storyline is truly heart warming.
Only watch if you're a die-hard fanBy RhythmNoir (1 review) , 21 Nov 2012I did enjoy this film but I was fairly disappointed at how it compared to other Studio Ghibli films. I am a long-time fan of their films and have a lot on DVD/Blu-ray and I was looking forward to seeing something new with this one but the animation just didn't live up to the standard of classic Ghibli films like 'Spirited Away' and 'Howl's Moving Castle' and the story was dull and very basic. There were no great memorable set-piece moments or scenes to speak of and the voice-acting (English dub) was very lifeless and unexciting. For a film whose description very much suggests a story featuring dragons they pop in briefly at the start and end and that's about it.
If you are a fan or the Studio Ghibli films or are interested in getting into some of them I would avoid this until you are desperate for something of theirs you haven't seen and can look past the flaws in this film.

Only watch if you've nothing else to do!By a customer , 26 Oct 2012This film was very slow moving and I lost interest. The dubbed voices, some British and some American, didn't fit the characters personalities. The whole thing didn't really work for me. Disappointing because I've seen others of these films, such as 'Spirited Away', and really enjoyed them.
