Vintage performance
By Louder from London , 22 Sep 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
This is how to put a show on. The Talking Heads vintage gig, filmed by Jonathan Demme. Watching gigs on TV is nowhere near as good as being there, but this DVD does a great job of taking you there. Even people who are not fans of the Talking Heads will enjoy this.- Was this review helpful to you?

(16)How it should be done
By ThomasQ (13 reviews) , 23 Apr 2013Perfect concert film. the camera stays on the stage rather and there are no crowd shots. I knew very little about Talking Heads before I watched this and didn't know most of their songs but this show converted me. The energy from David Byrne and the rest of the group had me captivated and when I finished the disc I started it all over again. This show was so good that every live show I've seen I've compared it. If you have any interest in music, whatever genre, watch this and see how it should be done.- Was this review helpful to you?

A standard for othe rock films to aspire to
By Kulturmonster (59 reviews) from Ipswich , 22 Apr 2012I first saw this on a black and white portable TV in the eighties and never forgot it. I have just about lost interest in videos of rock concerts now, but this one is every bit as original and engaging as I remembered. The staging, effects and performance are remarkable and always original. David Byrne is one of the great artists of his generation, equal to people like Laurie Anderson and Brian Eno. On a minimal budget, Talking Heads created a stage performance that is original but never pretentious.
This video is as good as hundreds of other rock videos pretend to be!- Was this review helpful to you?

Best concert movie ever?!!!
By a customer , 12 Jun 2011One of the reasons for making this movie was that the album 'Speaking in Tongues' had recieved a critical mauling, and David Byrne wanted to show everybody that the songs wern't that bad. So 'Stop Making Sense' was born (well that's what I was told anyway)
And what a movie arguably the best, and most joyous, concert film ever. The way the empty stage is filled. To the fact that everybody is having such a good time, just lifts the spirit.
Then comes that suit............- Was this review helpful to you?

memorable venue
By sarchi (1 review) from Maidstone , 16 Oct 2010when I first heard david byrne's stuff hit the waves in the eighties I made a mental note after all if your outta the sixties there is quite a few artists to keep your mind satisfied.. as all of the reviews I have read say this a very memorable concert gig handled virtually immacuately by demme a quite remarkable cinemaphotographer in his own right with such takes as neil young heart of gold (2006) and silence of the lambs 1991.. I have total admiration for byrne's work specially now it's on creative commons licence..
tina weymouth was a treat to see on b/ray heard an interview on radio 1 some years ago when she described the antics of bynre's composing for burning down as he did the rendition which she overheard thrashing at a table ..burning, burning down the house, etcetera..
all in all a time capsule that will go down in history as one the items that stands it's ground as a favorite- Was this review helpful to you?

Great Concert - disappointing Blu Ray
By a customer from Kingston upon Thames , 23 Aug 2010The concert is five stars. It's an intelligently put together show featuring some of their best tracks performed superbly. Unfortunately the picture quality on the blu ray is virtually the same as the DVD defeating the core point of getting blu ray. The blu ray comes from the same master as the DVD and is full of dirt, reel change cigarette burns and other distractions that are more pronounced in HD: 1.5 stars. However, the sound is much better than the DVD and really shines: 4 stars. Overall another example of a cheap release without bothering to remaster the film for HD. A great pity.- Was this review helpful to you?
