"...Excellent comedy, which balances an outrageous script with impeccable performances..."
Although credited as being made in 2004, this little French gem of a film was actually made in 2001.
Paul and Edith are a wealthy, middle class, middle-aged Paris couple. They live with their son Tanguy in a gorgeous apartment, and seem to want for nothing. Except Tanguy is 28 years old, and shows no sign of fleeing the nest...
Az?ma and Dussollier are hilarious as the frustrated parents, moving from quiet frustration to ever more frantic desperation in their attempts to 'encourage' Tanguy to move out. The chemistry between these two performers is lovely (witness their temporary respite during Tanguy's trip to Bejing).
The conclusion is rather limp in comparison to what goes before, but that aside, this is a wonderfully bitter French comedy, and highly recommended.
I rented this film on the strength of other recommendations and was very disappointed. The story which has been well explained in previous reviews revolves around very annoying son and his weak parents...i did not find it funny at all ..in fact it annoyed me so much that i gave up more than half way through...
If you love the director's other triumph, Tati Danielle, then you'll love this. Two parents desperate to be free of their live-at-home 28-yr-old, intellectual son, who start off unable to tell him he should go his own way. It soon degenerates into classic farce as they try every available wheeze to get him out, until they almost drive themselves mad with their failures. And yet all the time, Tanguy floats above their anger and frustration, dispensing pearls of philosophical Chinese wisdom and remaining calm.
This film is a builder; it starts off without too many laughs, then slowly builds to a crescendo of guffawing and real belly-laughs. It's a treat, and one of those comedies that the French do so well. Rent it - you won't be disappointed.
This comedy is quite slow for the first 15 minutes. I nearly turned it off. However, after that, it becomes more and more funny as the incredulity of the situation becomes greater and greater. For many educated people, this would be a decent comedy worth watching as it is different from any other. For the less educated, probably will be switched off quite quickly and therefore should not be rented. However, for ANY parent with an offspring still in the house (particularly one who has over-stayed their welcome)... a MUST see!! The mothers amusing sounds are particularly class.
This film was in French, which did not surprise me; but for the first two thirds there were no English sub titles, and as my knowledge of French is very limited, it was surprising that I continued to watch. I did so because the acting was good, and I sort of half followed the plot. Two thirds of the way through English sub-titles suddenly appeared and continued to the end. Had they done so at the beginning I would probably have rated the film with more than 2 stars.

The story of a son who never leaves home and parents who hatch plots to get him out. Sabine Asema is perfect as the loving mother who becomes physically sick at the sight of her son, simply because he is always there. This film is a brilliant observation of the complexities of love within a family, and hilarious with it too.

This is an excellent comedy with well known French actors Sabine Azema and Andr? Dussolier who give a great performance. It is best appreciated if you understand French, as the subtitles has lost some of the original flavour of the dialogues which are often hilarious. The end of the film is unexpected. Highly recommended. From one French and one English viewers in the East Midlands
I also had some trouble with the DVD although on second playing (yes it was that good)! there were no problems. I don't speak French but the expressions were wonderful and you could almost watch this with no sound or subtitles. Very classy - don't be surprised to see a tacky US remake before too long!
a very good entertainment on the french social life!!!
Enjoy it.
Very funny french comedy. Parents are acting very well and the son is the most annoying person you can meet.
Really enjoyed watching it.
For all French movies lovers not to miss!
