On its release, this was denounced as a travesty, a terrible Hollywoodisation of the cult comic on which it's based. And, yes, this gets nowhere near the sassy black spark of the original, yet those unfamiliar with its source will find it goofy, undemanding fare. Lori Petty is the Tank Girl of the title, demonstrating an early manifestation of “girl power” as she takes on evil Malcolm McDowell in a water-starved post-apocalyptic world. Director Rachel Talalay never quite gets a handle on the mix of comedy and futuristic action, but Petty is surprisingly credible in the lead and McDowell is suitably over the top as the villain. However, the most fun comes from watching hip rapper Ice-T playing a poetry-loving half-man/half-kangaroo.

Silly In All The Right Ways

This is not a great film. The acting is nothing special. It jumps from live action to cartoonish animation and back. The plot is fragmented. There are holes you could drive a tank through...and indeed they do that. The special effects are unspectacular. And the prosthetic make-up can be seen peeling off some of the characters is places.

But it's a movie of a comic-strip and it is made in a very comic-strip fashion. That could be a huge turn-off...but for me it worked. Approach with low expectations...but with an open mind you might be pleasantly surprised.

    Mad Max with breasts.

I nominate Tank Girl for cult status.

Tank Girl is a tough and cool female action character. The film breaks into cartoon animation for some scenes and is fun to watch.

Except for a few dodgy plot twists, this film stands up well to a modern audience. The sexual undertones were lost on me 10 years ago as were a few other references. It's a shame it didn't do better when it was released.

Look out for a young Naomi Watts as the shy Jet Girl.

    Wild, wacky and energetic

This always has to be one of my favourite themes, and 'Tank Girl' fulfils the brief most splendidly!

Lori Petty also brings a certain gutsy and insane humour to the role, which although aided by well-scripted one liners, is delivered by this feisty actress with finesse.

It could be argued that the use of comic strip techniques to progress the plot at certain junctures is a cop out and a cheap skate option, but I personally didn't mind it at all, and felt it served to highlight the fantasy element, and stylise the film as a whole.

I remember when this film came out - as a teenager I was keen to see Ice T in a ridiculous costume, and indeed, it's worth checking! The costumes and characters of his clan of half beast warriors although a little cheesy, are hilarious, perhaps more so now than then with the wealth of 'pc'/touchy feely approaches to life that many subscribe to these days - an amusing send up!

Still, for me, nothing beats watching a chick who's thrilled to find herself a new machine gun and tank, and whose response to torture threats is "I like pain".

A wild, wacky and energetic film.

    Tanked up

I have seen this film a few times and I always enjoy it. The film is just a great good versus evil film with a very cheesy chick flick feel. As the film title suggests it’s got a tank and a girl in it!

Set in the near future when water is power, the plot is basic and easy to follow. The outcome is predictable but nonetheless it is great entertainment. Plenty of funny moments and cheeky lines. Costumes are very cheerful and camp.

Recommend seeing if you’re into action or cheesy films or chick flicks, it’s got something for everyone. It’s even got a cabaret show scene in it too.

    Fun film.

Lori is the oringinal Lara Croft (but far better). This is a total "love it or hate it" movie. The fact is I LOVE IT. It is about as imaginative as you could possibly get, verging on total insanity at times. You really have to wonder how this plot was ever thought up (and what hallucinogenic substances were in use at the time.) This film is a great one to watch when your feeling low and want to watch something enjoyable without any relavence to everyday life.

    Full of one liners!

This film was such a blast from the past, and a really enjoyable one. Even my daughter loved this film and as a hormonally challenged 13 year old that is a feat in its self! It is daft, fun and mad, pure escapism!!

    Recommend it!

    Worse Sci Fi ever

Hi fellow dvd watchers - I absolutely love all Sci Fi, including the crummy ones, but this is just awful, shame really, as I liked the concept. Only watch if you are really desperate for a super corny flick

    Tank Girl

An average film, if a little bit corny. The best part of this film is the boss of Power & Water, Malcum McDowel.

    Very funny

Now here's a very quirky, funny and really weird movie. I enjoyed the completely different approach used in this movie. Just don't expect it to be your run of the mill little comedy - it really is quite weird. Well worth the watch.

    Very Enjoyable

I enjoyed this movie a LOT, as it has the same 'feel' as the original comic books I remember reading, and the same style of humor. It's very well done for 1995, the dialogue is well-scripted for the intent of the movie, and the funny stuff is actually funny. Some of the action scenes are a bit 'campy' - but then again, they're *supposed* to be that way in this kind of movie.
