If the title had not already worked against this dull movie, then the improbable story certainly would have. Burglar Gregory Hines plays the nimble-footed Max Washington, the son of a legendary dancer, who's released from prison faced with two options. He can either join mentor Little Mo (Sammy Davis Jr) at his tap dancing club or regroup with his old partners in crime for one last job, a jewel heist. Tap dance fanatics may well adore the film but few will be engaged by its assembly of clichéd characters. On the plus side are the swansong performance by the ailing Davis Jr, obviously relishing a character part, and the dazzling manoeuvrings of Gregory Hines.

  • In the dance routines of TAP, Gregory Hines has a look of lazily ecstatic glee that's almost irresistible.... Hines is sensational

    Average Stuff Great Dancing

Any film with Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jnr in it can't be bad, even if, like Tap, it has a very thin story line. Hines plays an ex con moving back into his old neighbourhood and back with his dad's tap dancing pals and more specifically a woman ;o).

Not a great deal happens but the dancing scenes more than make up for this, Sammy, Gregory and some experienced but aging tap stars go through their paces bringing some humour and no little wonder at their skills which would be astounding at any age leave alone the 60-70 plus they all must be.

Keep an eye out for a very young Savion who starred in Sesame Street as a young tap dancer.

Worth a watch if you like easy going films and or tap dancing.
