The cast is amazing, the produiction less so. But with the most superb leading trio singing Tatyana Onegin and Lensky there is not much more one could ask.
It is a Brian Large TV production - seems that all the best staged opera productions on DVD are by him.
The Metroplitan sets and production are, I thought, rather limp and unimaginative for what is one of the most emtoional of all operas - it was aiming for a sort of symbolic realism, if that isn't a contradiciton in terms.
So, to a certian extent, you just had to ignore the sets and revel in the fantastic singing, great playing by the orechestra, and the greatness of the oepra. Highly recommended.
It was with much expectation that we rented this new Metropolitan Opera production of Tchaikovsky's most popular opera. Satisfactorily, the three leading singers are all excellent in their roles, notably Ramon Vargas as Lenski. A minor complaint here is that Olga is supposed to be a young teenager, and although Elena Zaremba is a great singer she could have been more suitably cast as Olga's mother.
However, the quality of the singing and Gergiev's reliable conducting are offset by the horrendous production, with minimalistic sets at odds with the spirit of Romanticism. My Russian wife, who is deeply familiar with both Pushkin and Tchaikovsky, was so disgusted that she suggested the producer be imprisoned for his violation of this great opera.
We therefore give 4 stars for the singing and conducting, and 1 star for the production. The average of 3 stars might be erring on the generous side.
