Tenebrae

A virtual style-fest from Italian horror mastermind Dario Argento, TENEBRAE was originally released in butchered form in the United States as UNSANE. Anthony Franciosa portrays Peter Neal, an American mystery novelist promoting his latest release in Rome. It's not long, however, until a killer is hot on his trail doing evil deeds which mimic those of the murderer in Neal's book. This very basic premise is executed in an exceedingly and beautifully stylized method which makes the film truly fascinating to watch. Those who do not like the sight of blood, however, should be forewarned--it flows frequently, and in copious amounts.

One of the best psycho-thrillers from Dario Argento, the Italian Hitchcock, full of stylish camerawork, kinky flashbacks, impressive gore and an ace electronic soundtrack. Novelist Anthony Franciosa visits Rome to promote his latest bestseller, only to find a murderer is copying the killings in his book. It's enormous fun sifting out the red herrings in this ultra-violent Agatha Christie-style whodunnit, and the twist ending really is twisted. Argento demonstrates his unparalleled technical virtuosity in the famous roof-glide scene, where the camera prowls over and through an apartment building in which a murder will be committed, before witnessing the break-in ? all in one long, continuous take.

    Under appreciated Argento

Love this film. It is one of Argento's better-plotted films, but it differs in style from his earlier work. It's not as colourful, indeed it has a cold and sterile look. Tenebrae also has a meaner edge (taken even further in his later films) which may put some people off. However, it features a number of set-pieces that are classic Argento and a great score by Goblin

I must qualify my praise of this film. If you like this sort of thing, poorly acted, gory, seventies synthed murder mystery and suspenses with plenty of self-indulgent camerawork, you will love this.

The director's attitudes to women have long been criticised but for most of the twentieth century only men got killed in films!
