You’d figure they’d be on to a winner here, wouldn’t you? Time Travel and dinosaurs…how could it possibly fail? The answer is: pretty resoundingly.

Great idea, mind you. Earth is on its last legs, polluted beyond salvation. But wait, they’ve discovered a rift in the time/space continuum, or something, through which they can transport people back to when the world was young (85 million years younger in fact) so that, effectively, humanity can begin again. Well, in theory, or at least in the minds of the makers of this twaddle. Actually, it aspires to twaddle ‘cos it ain’t even that good.

The opening scenes are OK and start you off with high expectations; think Blade Runner, as far as the sets are concerned, and they do give the impression that a lot of money has gone into the production. Well that’d be right, but most of it seems to have gone on the first thirty minutes. After that, it’s all downhill. It makes Primeval look like Ben Hur.

It’s not that the dinos aren’t impressive…well, no, actually they aren’t, frankly. And there aren’t that many of them, but they’re a darn sight more impressive than the acting and the woeful script. An hour in ( yeah, I did see the pilot all the way through..) and I was rooting for the dinosaurs. If they had devoured the rebellious teenagers then and there it wouldn’t have been a moment too soon. The kids are, not to put too fine a point on it, ghastly. My fellow reviewer, Historyman, was right on the noddle when he refers to the ‘children of the main characters getting away with acts of crass stupidity in order to help the lame plots work’. I hope he doesn’t mind me quoting him. I really couldn’t agree more.

This could have been great, but what you have, in essence, is your common or garden ( all right it’s a big garden…) domestic family drama. Think Party Of Five with thrashing undergrowth and the odd roar or two. If the friggin’ synopsis tells you there are gonna be dinosaurs, the least they can do is give us some biting, running and screaming, for Pete’s sake. Jeez, Louise, you get more of that on the Flintstones. It was so boring that by the time part three came on, I was fast forwarding like a man possessed, in the forlorn hope there might, at least, be a smidgen or two of gore.

    There wasn’t.

Like an idiot, taken in by the hype, I put this first series down as high priority. Having sat through – well, fidgeted, more like – the first disk, I erased the remaining episodes from my rental list.

Jurassic Park..? More like Thorpe Park…without the crisps and fizzy drinks..avoid at all costs.

  • Good versus evil quandry

I really enjoyed this and thought it was great sci-fi. I don`t often watch sci-fi, but this had me hooked at the get go. I only like it if it is believeable and this is. The idea of starting a whole new world must appeal to lots of people. This deals with how people react in unusual circumstances, but still keeps basic family values. It is still a good versus evil quandry, which never goes out of fashion.

  • Terra Nova should not have been cancelled

I loved Terra Nova! I thought it had great potential to become a great show, but sadly they cancelled after the first season. Some acting was dodgy I'll admit but the whole thing entirely was fantastic!.Would be very happy to see if someone picked it up and made a second season

  • Terrably Boring

    Rated - 0.5 stars

How could such a good idea be developed so badly?

A rift in time allows modern humans to colonise the prehistoric Earth, a nice idea to be sure, but it's all down hill from there.

The plots are grossly unconvincing, more of a soap opera than an adventure, with the children of the main characters constantly getting away with acts of crass stupidity in order to help the lame plots work.

The science is unconvincing - the link is a one way link, but sometimes it isn't - how is it possible that the bad guys in the past can communicate with their bosses in the future.

The set is utterly unconvincing, not a colony, more like a glossy holiday camp, with a fence that the kids can climb through - but it's meant to keep dinosaurs out.

Big money may have gone into this but it simply fails to fire. OK for a nine year old child - maybe.
