of the Thomas Hardy novel with good acting all round.
To compete against Polanski's Tess is a hard task, and although this long adaptation may be more faithful to the book, it lacks the style of the film version. Some of the incidental characters (the parents, Tess' drunken friend) are very well drawn, but the main three characters seem to have too much to cope with. Not bad, but watch the film instead.
