Emilio Estevez's directorial career has been largely undistinguished (Wisdom, Men at Work), but when he scripted this respectful adaptation of the S E Hinton novel, it seemed he might well have a career behind as well as in front of the camera. He and Craig Sheffer take the roles of two troubled adolescents whose friendship is threatened when romance rears its head. Estevez's screenplay is faithful to its source and, although it is a little downbeat, it remains a moving drama about the traumas of growing up. The strong supporting cast includes Kim Delaney and, in a small role, Morgan Freeman.

I first saw this in the 80's when the brat pack was at it's height, and I find that 20 years on I still love it, it has laughter, suspense, romance and action, can't ask for more!
Definitley one to see if you love retro movies!
