Despite a lingering whiff of Georgette Heyer, this historical romp has a pleasingly anachronistic undertone that prevents it from feeling like a Sunday evening serial. Set in 18th-century Ireland, when second sons were wont to kidnap heiresses in order to persuade them to marry, thereby avoiding the priesthood or the army, Stefan Schwartz's boisterous adventure is soon slowed by stereotypical characters and clichéd dialogue. However, Daniel Lapaine and Matthew Rhys are suitably dashing as the headstrong suitors seeking to keep spirited sisters Sophia Myles and Alice Evans out of the clutches of nouveau riche cad Liam Cunningham. It's like Hammer without the horror, just lashings of irony.

  • Tiresome period romp, in the style of a raucous fancydress party.

Quite an extraordinary romantic comedy! Very entertaining, with a plot that twists and turns all the way through the film to keep you guessing! Beautiful scenery and fabulous costumes! A breath of fresh air. Wonderful!

    Great film

If you love drama, excitement, romance and action this is the film for you. It is right up there with Pirates of the Caribbean.

    Nostalgia from the fifties

An amusing romp through the 19th century Ireland, among the posh folk of course. Swords and pistols at the slightest excuse, lively ladies and a cruel suitor for the younger girl. Add in a hilarious hanging, it all added up to a happy evening's entertainment.

    Great fun!

I really like this film. It was good to have a new twist on the typical poor woman trying to meet a rich man of period dramas.

    Predictable But Enjoyable

I have to say I enjoyed this. Took me a little while to quite figure out what was going on but in the end you don't really need to. It's just a romance story set in the 18th Century.

It was rather predictable but good fun to pass an hour and a half.

    Romantic period film

although this film was predictable it was a great film to watch. I enjoyed the romance with the traditional baddie. For an hour and half of escape that is not hard work try this film it is just the job.

    Real entertainment

Brilliant film, kept me entertained throughout, comedy at its best. No idea how historically accurate it is but who cares? It's a film meant to be enjoyed, and I did.

    Fantastic, Brilliant period drama

This was much better than I thought it would be, the characters were brilliant, the reality that it was actually based on a real story makes it all the more realistic and makes for great viewing. The script was well written with a great twist that you don't see coming (like you usually do!) Would recommend this to Pride and Predjudice lovers especially... but to any one else give it a go, you'll be surprised!

    An enjoyable romantic adventure

Although it's pretty undemanding, this film turned out to be more enjoyable than I expected.

The outcome is never really in any doubt - it's definitely a romantic adventure for those with a soft heart - but this good-looking period piece has enough action to maintain a cracking pace.

Filmed entirely on location in Ireland, the wild scenery provides a perfect backdrop to the action.
