    [Highly rated reviewer]

I must have seen this film 50 odd times, and it still never looses it's appeal. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio make a wierd but workable estranged couple, who, miles beneath the sea encounter an alien race, very good special effects. Watch out for some scene stealing performaces by Micheal Biehn playing the bad guy.

    WHY?!

I have to know WHY this movie drones on .... and on ..... and on ..... and then, in the LAST 15 MINUTES gets good ?!

Whittles on like some article in 'Take A Break' magazine, before something happens ..... What happens is kinda good, but for God sake DO SOMETHING DURING THE FILM PEOPLE !

James Cameron's The Abyss is one of the most underrated science-fiction tales of the 1980's. Ed Harris plays the role of Virgil 'Bud' Brigman, the leader of a diving crew at an oil rig, who is reassigned to rescue the crew of a sunken submarine, but when they arrive, they find that the crew have drowned, but they uncover an alien race, which has lived underwater for many years. But a crazed Navy SEAL, Lt. Coffey (Michael Beihn, in his best performance ever) believes them to be a threat and launches a plot to destroy them, resulting in a race against time to uncover the truth before all hell breaks loose. I bought this, hoping it would be very entertaining, and it really lived up to expectations. The film not only has amazing underwater photography, but also some amazing special effects and a pretty original plot. The acting, the action, characters and a well-written script make the film a must-see movie. Though if you're going to watch the movie, see the special edition, as it is longer, but also contains more character development, and the only downside is that there is an unnessecary cut to remove a scene of animal cruelty involving a rat in breathing fluid, which, despite being filmed so that even though rats breathed it that they didn't die, is cut from the UK. Despite this, the film is very worth-watching and defintely a good way to spend two and a half hours if you're bored.
