    [Highly rated reviewer]

A film about lots of miserable people.

The one's who aren't miserable, are just acting badly so hard to tell if they're supposed to be miserable too.

Yes, perhaps they all have a better future to look forward to, but it will be one without humour.

This film is very much a matter of taste. It is very much to mine, being faithful to an excellent story, full of quirky characters. I thought William Hurt and Geena Davis were wonderful. Kathleen Turner was weaker, but frankly only because that is what her character is supposed to sound like - the book repeatedly refers to her breathy voice. She didn't have a great deal to go on.

The plot deals with the emotional fallout from the death of a young child -a senseless murder. There is an entertaining subplot around Macon's mad, obsessive family. The message, that love and salvation often come when you least expect it, and sometimes from the last person you would think, is quite uplifting. All of the characters find what they need, in the oddest of circumstances.

Slow. Absorbing. Entertaining. Thought-provoking. A very unusual love story.

I thought this movie was very entertaining. William Hurt was excellent and the storyline had a few good twists and turns. It was relaxing to watch and very enjoyable.

You know those films were you keep waiting for something to happen.....and then nothing does. I found it hard to care about any of the characters - the most interesting of which being the pet dog. Don't bother renting this - you will never get those 2 hours of your life back.

I couldn't decide if the film was a comedy or a tragedy ... it was light-hearted in parts but a tragedy that it was made in the first place. A waste of a good cast who at times appeared to be there under sufferance. Glad I only rented it.

Watching this film is very much like knocking on a neighbour's door, waiting around while they go to the loo and then dashing in and shoving your face down the bowl before they've had a chance to flush. In other words, it's like eating the film equivalent of poo. And not your own, tasty poo either! No no no - this is a stranger's poo. And who knows what they've been eating. Perhaps they've been chewing on some William Hurt burgers - you know - the blank expression patty with lettuce and rice-cakes? Or maybe it's a Geena (Best Supporting Actress?!) Davis, gleefully strangling a Dog casserole. Perhaps they'd snacked on a Kathleen Turner pie, you know with some greasy sauce made out of the dude who played the president in Independence Day... Whatever, I'm surprised it managed to get all the way through their digestive system without a violent, retching reaction to this miserable platter of pointlessness. Nothing at all recommends this movie (unless you believe the critics who seeminly love it). Damn the critics. They sold me a grey shoe filled with vomit by claiming it was a golden supercharged unicorn with wi-fi. The filthy liars.
