Having waited for weeks to see Flightplan, and having been sorely disappointed, I went back to The Accused. This is just a great film. The acting and direction are flawless. You squirm and are appalled as the story unfolds, and you are kept hanging on till the very end to get the full horror of the event, and then the eventual outcome. Still a potent and relevant film today.

  • A gritty, but thoughtful, film. 9/10.

OK, so this is an old film, but one I had not seen and my wife, who thoroughly recommended it to me, had. After some playful Hollywood films the week previous we were itching for something gritty, and The Accused delivered perfectly. The story follows a young girl who is attacked at a bar by a group of men one drunken night out. The story starts with her reporting the incident to the police and cleverly relays the nights incidents leading up to the eventual trials. As the film progresses slowly, but always keeping you engaged, you learn more about the young girl brilliantly portrayed by Jodie Foster, and her less than wholesome background. This and the fact that the true horrors of the events are not revealed till the end make you doubt her claims, or at least understand her solicitors decisions, before witnessing the true events in a ending that may be hard to watch for some people. A gritty, but thoughtful, film on a very serious and real subject. Still holds up well even today too! 9/10. 5 Stars.

This is a powerful film that challenges stereotypes and just about avoids the potential for sentimentality in the story. I thought it was let down by the gratuitously drawn out detailing of the rape scene which was pretty hard going but not totally convincing.
