Worth watching but do not expect too much!

I found watching 'The Actors' to be an inconsistent and sharply varying experience. There are moments of great physical comedy from Dylan Moran but there are also moments of agonising irritation, as the story sometimes grinds to a near halt, basically because of poor directing and some occasionally leaden dialogue. In terms of directing, the pace of the film is all over the place, with fast paced humour suddenly grindng to a near halt, with some isolated patches of truly terrible dialoge. Dylan Moran approaches his comic best when he dons some very convincing make-up to 'play' various different characters in the film and certainly, at times, equals the hilarity of perhaps his best known comic creation - Bernard Black, from the Series Black Books. During these sequences, the film comes to life and repays your effort in watching it. Michale Caine is also very funny in parts of the film, as he does his best with a script that is truly dreadful on occassion but I wonder if this was one he did mainly for the money! Michael Gambon has some very funny moments too but I found he too was not given the opportunity to fulfil his potential and, at times, his antics are truly cringeworthy! The basic premise of the film should have given plenty of opportunity for all three actors to excel; it is basically a comedy of errors and there are signs of brilliance, what the film as a whole might have been, if only it had a script and direction that matched its potential throughout. As it is, the plot turns are just so poorly executed in places that you feel frustrated by them and the patchy pacing and leaden dialogue, that creep in from time to time, do not help. In conclusion, it is definitely very funny in places, particularly if you like Dylan Moran's style of physical comedy, and so it is worth seeing for that alone. My advice? Rent it to enjoy Dylan Moran at his madcap best and Michael Caine and Michael Gambon's several funny scenes but do not expect much more from 'The Actors'.
