Arguably the BEST FILM EVER MADE !

Certainly in the Top 3 of its genre and certainly in anybody's Top 10 of any kind of film, I would imagine.

The Robin Hood character and story are most likely one of the most used storylines in cinema history, with a host of films related to the character and tale.

Of all of them, though the Silent version with Douglas Fairbanks is very good, and several others are very likeable ( I particularly like Sean Connery's ' Robin and Marion' and Kevin Kostner's version........this 1938 adaptation is streets above any other version.

Indeed, as I have said, it surpasses nearly all films ever made about any subject in any genre........it is right up there with 'Gone With The Wind', 'It's A Wonderful Life', Sullivans Travels', 'Random Harvest' et al ( and in my view surpasses any film I can think of-----and I've seen em all-----from Silent classics right the way thru to the current films ( so many of which are so poor).

I have seen great 3-strip Technicolor but never have I seen better colour than this : much credit goes to the Technicolor director or adviser on this movie. It is glorious colour.

The co-director, Michael Curtiz, is IMHO, the best director of all time...........and he and the other well-known and admired director makes the film immaculately, down to the tiniest detail.

The casting is absolutely superb......not just Flynn and de Havilland continuing their wonderful chemistry in part 3 of their pairing together in so many watchable movies, but also a glittering cast of stars and also stalwart supporting actors: Rains, Rathbone,Hale,Pallette, O'Connor, etc.

The setting, both studio and on location ( with Sherwood set in the Hollywood Hills:))) is first-class. Editing, script, cinematography, all technical departments just right.

A special mention for the Oscar -winning music from the great Korngold.

The viewer has to understand the Academy Awards' rivalry and competition in the 1938 Oscars------in any other year, I'm sure this version of 'Robin Hood' would have 'swept the board'........but a glance at the other nominations ( with several 5 star films all in the same year) explains why so Oscars were awarded to this triumph of the cinema.

But,what do Oscars matter when we have been left forever with this masterpiece of The Golden Age Of Hollywood ?

This film will be a joy forever. I pity younger generations who may close their minds and viewing choices to such film as this one, simply because it was made 75 years ago.......you will not find its like nowdays. I watch films from the Silent Era up to the present day. I have seen tens of thousands of films---it is one of my abiding hobbies and passions----and I give credit to very good present-day films such as The Kings Speech, The Bourne films with the excellent Matt Damon, etc, even though they are so few in number compared to the Oscar nominations for a year like 1938.

I wonder if younger generations give films from the Golden Age the time and attention they deserve. I would like to think so.......but the number of reviews of 1930s and 40s films suggest that they do not bother. How sad. And how blinkered of a generation that may never have seen the greatest films ever made.

This movie reaches the pinnacle of what cinema set out to do : entertain, excite, make us laugh, make us feel tension and danger----all the components of 'escapism'.

I still have faith in films of every era----there are good ones in every decade-----but nowdays they are just getting less and less in number.

So go back to a glorious age when cinema audiences were rivetted by marvellous films that will remain legendary forever...........watch 'The Adventures Of Robin Hood' !

Has there ever been... will there ever be... an action star with as much charisma as Errol Flynn? And in Robin Hood he's at his best. Rathbone is a terrific villain and the film itself remains one of the great action flicks.

  • 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' is a masterpiece!

Magnificent, entertaining and certainly in a class of its own, 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' (1938) deserves the acclaim that it has received over the years.

Meticulously directed by Michael Curtiz and William Keighley with a rousing score by the legendary Austrian composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold (the score is widely considered one of the greatest scores ever written), 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' looks and feels really special. Enhanced by a great screenplay by Norman Reilly Raine and Seton I. Miller and a perfect cast including Errol Flynn, Olivia DeHavilland and Basil Rathbone,

I strongly recommend you watch 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' for yourself and enjoy!

  • Visual Feast of Early Colour

Robin Hood boasts some of the most sumptuous early colour cinematography and a full blown sense of swashbuckling fun. Throwing history to the four winds, ditching intelligent scripting in favour of simplistic story telling, avoiding complex characterisation and controversial parallels; this is a true product of the Hays Code era of US cinema. Family friendly fun which established many of the conventions for subsequent historical adventures. Many action sequences stand the test of time well, as does Flynn's athletic swordsmanship, although the eagle eyed may notice Robin's sword getting bent out of shape during the final battle with fiendish Basil Rathbone's Gisbourne.
