I like a Basil Rathbone film, and this one was just as good as any of his I've seen. The plot might be a little 'all over the place' and Nigel Bruce at his bumbling best but the action alone kept me riveted. Definitely watch it.

This was the only Sherlock Holmes film I have not seen and it did not disappoint.

Once again Holmes has to face Moriarty and dispense with him. An enjoyable movie which if you love Basil Rathbone in the role you will enjoy.

  • Atmospheric, but very stupid

This is the highest rated Basil Rathbone movie on imdb, with Baskervilles second. But I find it hard to believe Conan Doyle had a hand in it. It's got Victorian London off to a tee, with loads of dark and fog. And it starts off promisingly, with the evil Moriaty acquitted of a murder everyone knows he committed. But the plot is fairly risible; a fellow is supposed to die on a designated day, but Holmes is faffing about at the Natural History Museum looking for pointless clues, when the fellow in question is advised to walk home alone through foggy London, where he will be safe! The final resolution had me scratching my head. It's entertaining but Holmes seems way too cavalier over his clients' welfare, and too dumb to realise he's being played by Moriaty for a fool. It all seems most out of character.

A club-footed man, an ancient Incan funeral dirge and a chinchilla foot contrive to sidetrack Holmes and Watson as Professor Moriarty plans the crime of the (Nineteenth) century.

The last of the Victorian Rathbones, and the only film not to misspell the professor as 'Moriarity' (copyright evasion or just Fox's credit-writers being better spellers than Universal's?).

More characterisation than usual: Moriarty loves flora and fauna, whilst Holmes rather creepily experiments on houseflies and the chromatic scale. Also note that an irreplaceable emerald is delivered to the Tower of London by a certain Captain Mainwaring!

one of the first sherlock holmes' films and i think one of the best starring Ida Lupino a much underrated actress who went on to direct a few movies later on in her career this movie was well scripted and directed and of course with a memorable cast a must see classic!!
