A couple making out in the dessert in the Mid West witness a small satalite falling to earth. Innocently they take it back into the small rural town. Curiosity killed the Cat and upon closer inspection of the satalite they unleash a virus (the Andromeda Strain) which proceeds to kill all of the town folk but for a child and a local drunk.
The clock begins to tick as the virus spreads over the local area. Will the Federal Government be able to restrain the virus before it meets a metropolitan area or will the fate of the USA and possibly the world be met?
This is a 170 minute action adventure movie with a disaster theme split over 2 DVD's (Dispatched both at the same time). Despite the lengt it didnt seem overly long and we enjoyed the movie thoroughly. I guess you cant really go wrong with a MIchael Crichton adaptation.
If you want to get the tension of the book without the cgi and bogus science of this film then watch the 1971 original which was nominated for two Oscars. This version won't get any nominations!
A VERY GOOD SCI FI A MUST WATCH FOR THE FAMILY
Not bad just got into it and it finished...there should be 2xdvd's and i only got 1.
The Film was made for tv and is 170mins....but the 1st dvd is only...84mins...

If you've read the book - watch this. It takes a couple of new tangents, but does it really well.
If you haven't read the book - watch this. Just a great movie. Well put together, well acted, all the right ingredients combined perfectly.
riveting, they dont make them like this anymore

At first sight, The Andromeda Strain looked to be another brainless disaster television-film. However, the fast-paced and witty script soon proved that this program is nothing of the sort.
The plot focuses on the Wildfire science team tasked to prevent a global outbreak of an unstoppable pathogen, but it also encompasses military conspiracy and investigative journalism. It's the pathogen which proves most interesting, as its nature and origins are slowly and terrifically discovered.
This film is relentless, and the first half an hour introduces numerous characters, some of which aren't consequential to the rest of the film. I needed to rewatch the first disc whilst taking substanial notes to understand the denser plotlines.
The biggest treat is that the scientific language of the protaginists is not watered down. This is superior and intelligent television.
I normally give a dvd a chance but fell asleep after half an hour to much cgi for me made hulk look real and that cgi was bad enough didnt bother with disc 2
Very predictable but kill time.
The media reviews of this two-parter have been pretty mixed, with the majority tending towards a bad rating. However, it is actually pretty good with a nicely padded storyline taking into account the bigger picture.
Admittedly, it does have a few cheesy moments, but then every TV series does. Also, if you are used to the current trend in 100mph 'caffeinated' shows (the majority of US shows these days) then you may be disappointed as this one goes at a much slower pace. However, it is well worth watching anyway.
Sure, the original is better, but as a modern remake, its a pretty good attempt. The story and acting are consistent and the special effects are also good. If you liked the original, or simply like Sci Fi, then I would definitely recommend this.
