    Assassination of Richard Nixon

Excellent - highly recommended. Emotive, heartfelt, desperately sad and utterly convincing, this film sees Sean Penn turn in the performance of his career.

This may have been said countless times about an actor who continues to turn in 'worthy' performances (whilst keeping a keen eye on the Oscar nominations), but in this case it really is true. The subject may be gloomy - a lonely man's descent into depression, and ultimately madness - but this drives the film's message through with incredible force. A truly amazing piece of work.

    Not to be missed.

    Highly recommended!

Harrowing and, in its own discreet way, quite shocking, this sharp, slyly satiric drama of the American dream gone wrong is one of the few modern-day movies which manages to capture the gritty, rebellious spirit of the ‘70s classics.

It invites comparison with films like The Conversation, The French Connection and, most obviously, Taxi Driver- both films centre on an angry loner, both end in a violent bloodbath.

And in many ways, this low-key movie is a match for Scorsese’s classic; Penn is certainly as good as De Niro in his prime, delivering a nuanced, subtle performance far from the showiness of his Oscar-winning turn, and it’s mainly thanks to him, in the end, that the movie works so well- which it does.

    Exceptionally so.

    Fantastic Mr Foxx

    • 24 Nov 2009

Is there anything Jamie Foxx can’t do? If he hasn’t directed yet, you can bet it’s only a matter of time because it seems everything he’s ever put his mind to, he’s been wildly successful. To state the obvious: he’s an Oscar winner (best actor, for Ray). He’s notched up number one albums and singles. And he first came to public attention as a stand-up comedian – a career that led him to the hit TV series In Living Color, alongside the Wayans... Read more
