Excellent - highly recommended. Emotive, heartfelt, desperately sad and utterly convincing, this film sees Sean Penn turn in the performance of his career.

This may have been said countless times about an actor who continues to turn in 'worthy' performances (whilst keeping a keen eye on the Oscar nominations), but in this case it really is true. The subject may be gloomy - a lonely man's descent into depression, and ultimately madness - but this drives the film's message through with incredible force. A truly amazing piece of work.

    Not to be missed.

Sean Penn is amazing in this. The mood and feel of this film reminded me of Taxi Driver. I was gripped from the opening sequence through to the very end. A well developed, honest and fantastically produced film. Well worth a watch.

  • Simply unhinged

The story of a small insignficant depressed man which makes for an insignifcant and depressing film. Samual J Bicke may have considered himself an idealist but he was nothing more than unhinged. End of story.

  • Good character study of loser with psychological problems

Compelling story of a would-be salesman, a loser, a fantasist, who step by step walks to the edge, then over into the abyss. Sympathetic study of a difficult person with moderate psychological problems.

  • Painful, intense, interesting and Sean Penn...

A quiet, well acted and interesting film. Sean Penn is wonderful, as he so often is, though there are times when his character seems too similar to elements of his character within 'I am Sam,' which made those moments less believable. In one scene in the kitchen, we see his character sitting at the table without a top on, thereby revealing a muscular body; this did not ring true for a) the sort of man his character is, and b) a man who has spent many weeks/months out of work, depressed and brooding in his flat. Little details such as this mean that I cannot give this film full marks. However, the break down of Penn's character, though very uncomfortable to witness, was highly believable. Very enjoyable but incredibly painful to watch at times.

Excellent film all round-Penn is simply magnificent and the film itself is far better than Falling Down. Really liked the personal way it was filmed that made it impossible not to be in his shoes at every point. Well worth a watch.
