[Highly rated reviewer]Excellent - highly recommended. Emotive, heartfelt, desperately sad and utterly convincing, this film sees Sean Penn turn in the performance of his career.
This may have been said countless times about an actor who continues to turn in 'worthy' performances (whilst keeping a keen eye on the Oscar nominations), but in this case it really is true. The subject may be gloomy - a lonely man's descent into depression, and ultimately madness - but this drives the film's message through with incredible force. A truly amazing piece of work.
Not to be missed.

assassination of Richard NixonBy a customer from Eastbourne , 31 Jul 2009I thought this was a deeply moving film, a sort of slow burner to an inevitable ending... It portrays all that's wrong with capitalism: haves and have nots, the perceived need to lie to get ahead and motivation by at work through 'incentives' A really good reflection of the society we have ended up with but didn't necessarily vote for...
Not very motivational!By Gilesy5 (10 reviews) from Huntingdon , 08 Jun 2009Now I know this wasn't going to be an easy watch, but unfortunately that was what I was in the mood for. Therefore I got through about 30 mins of the film before I switched it off.
From what I saw, Sean Penn's depiction of a 'failed' man, who was gonna fail some more before the end credits role, was effortless for him. The man is an acting genius.
So convincing was his performance of a saddo with the wrong attitude I just couldn't watch the rest of his car-crash of an existence.
The picture quality was slightly grainy, giving this an appearance of a cheaper, independant production. The sound, whilst always clear (you can even hear the nuances of his failure), isn't going to set a surround system alight. Merely an adequate stereo soundtrack.
I just wasn't in the mood for this, and I think that's my message here... do you want to watch failure on screen? If so, get it here!
waste of talentBy chatters (58 reviews) from Torquay , 03 Jun 2009A dull little film, about a dull little man. Sean Penn does a fine job of acting but, you just wonder, Why did he Bother? The pace is so slow, the charatcter unengaging. Naomi Watts does a fine job too, but has the good sense to do a runner half way through. I just wish i had.
